with all these "otherwise good-hearted fellows and ladies" on the road always trying to crash into you,

what dash cam have you chosen to run, to catch them on tape, to cover yourself liability-wise / for insurance purposes, to have more evidence on your side than just words?

Bought a Street Guardian SG9665GC a couple years ago. My min. requirement was to be able to read license plates at night.

I have an Anker Revo dashcam. It's junk don't reccomend it whatsoever. Video quality is good and it records with no issues but the software to get the videos off is pure TRASH, audio is useless, night vision isn't great. Overall not impressed by it, figured it was a name brand so it must be decent, guess not.

What's the best one using a capacitor instead of a battery? I'm in PHX so the heat would kill a battery powered one.

It uses a battery and I've had no problems but I also park in my garage and have covered parking at work..........

Here is a compilation of near misses from my first year of using it have yet to witness or be involved in an accident with it yet a few NSFW language moments

The quality of that video is trash. I don't think I saw a single legible license plate. Maybe it's youtube's compression ?

Thanks I just ordered two of them, one for my car and one for my wife's car.

Not too long ago a lady in Corolla jumped directly in front of me from a company parking-lot/exit straight into the left lane. I was doing about 70mph when she pulled out making what it looked like a wide turn into the right lane. I was already in the left lane, so I veered to the extreme left of the left lane, almost to the shoulder thinking she was taking the turn extremely wide. Nope, she was aiming for the left lane, and she wasn't in a hurry to go anywhere. I had no place to go and too close for the brakes to save it. Luckily my track and motorcycle-riding experience saved me. I rode the grass around her casually without skipping a heartbeat. I didn't even honk, slow down or anything. I don't think the horn would've made any difference at that point. However, I think the way I passed her (rumbling) probably startled the crap out of her, a lot better than the horn.

There's a few things to look for with a dash cam:

      1. Get something capacitor based. Ones with batteries don't do so well in the heat. A battery failure could be a fire hazard or at least cause the camera not to finish writing the buffer to the card if power is cut.
      2. Buffered parking mode is a feature that will constantly monitor your car when parked, but only saves footage to the SD card if it senses motion or impact. The neat thing is that it will record the 10-20 seconds before the impact/motion is sensed so you can actually see an incident play out.
      3. Some models (Thinkware and the new Blackvue cameras) have voltage monitoring built in for the parking mode. Otherwise, you'll have to get a hardwire kit that does voltage monitoring. Make sure you get something that will allow a cutoff above 12V so you don't drain your battery too much.

I'm running a Blackvue DR-750 in one car and a Thinkware Q800 Pro in the other. Both are capacitor-based cameras with buffered parking modes. I like Thinkware's parking mode implementation better- it detects whether ACC power is turned on or off which means it goes into and out of parking mode quickly. Blackvue uses motion, so it takes a few minutes of being parked for the parking mode to kick in, and a little bit of driving to switch it back to continuous mode. Thinkware's audio cues get tiresome pretty quickly though; I turned the voice on mine off which means I won't be notified of parking events of if there's a card failures.

One very important thing: get a high endurance SD card. I've got Samsung Pro Endurance cards for my cameras, but there's a few companies that make equivalent cards.

N00b to dashcams here other than those sweet Russian videos

Do you get some sort of an insurance discount for having a dashcam? Or is it purely on you to reap the benefit after you've been hit by one of these retards?

I think it's a combo of the free software I used to edit the clips together and youtube compression. Going over the original files I can pause and read most of the plates.

Any recommendations for a single cab truck cam that has front and rear without as separate rear camera dongle thing (basically all in one unit)?
The only one I found was a uber driver camera with a wide-angle interior camera.

The viofo A129 pro duo I posted is a super capacitor. With the hardwire kit it can stay on all the time and has a voltage selector to shutdown to prevent the car battery from fully discharging. The sup cap alone lets it run for a few seconds or so.

I had a rexing v1p dual camera before, The original battery took a dump within a year. I replaced it with a better one, higher heat range and 1000 mah more capacity and it still fit. That would run for 15 minutes easy.
Without the battery, all the video in progress get corrupted as soon as the power is lost.

I have a Viofo A119S (capacitor model) in my Suburban and Leaf. Both are 2+ years old, and both work great. I like them better than the older Mini 0801 which is in my Jeep--that (battery-based) camera also still works perfectly, but it has poorer resolution than the Viofos.

From what I see, the Viofo A119S has been replaced by a newer model. Based on how much I like the 119, I would buy this replacement if I were shopping for another camera today. (Come to think of it, I would like to put cameras in the Grand Prix and the Shelby....)

Ding Ding Pai. It's decent, but I'd like something with a mobile app for viewing video that actually works.

Any good of them is easily removable? I had a Papago clip-on mirror (qualilty is decent) but oddly my Audi rear mirror is not high enough to receive it (it keeps falling). Having being busted multiple times, I prefer to not let anything visible in the cockpit Some people will commit stupid crimes to gain $50.

The Viofo cameras attach by snapping into a dock, so they can be removed without having to disconnect any cables. The dock would still be visible, though.

You could always get a suction cup mount.

Owl Cam. Apparently they went out of business and now the new company that bought them wants to charge $215 per year for the cellular service vs the $99 I was expecting to pay before they sold.

OwlCam allows you to connect to the camera on your phone to look in/out in live time or even speak to a burglar, similar to a ring doorbell for your car. But I'm not going to pay for that anymore after they doubled the price.
