What is this beast you may ask?

pretty amazing when you look at the numbers. Also I really like the styling on this. I have seen the 7 series SUV several times in traffic and that thing just does not do it for me. Every time I look at it, something is off with it.

What a time to be alive and moneyed.

I remember once hustling (or so I thought) through Angeles Crest in my S2k and had some minivan looking thing fly up behind me. Of course I pulled over and felt some shame as an R63 flew by and quickly disappeared./CSB

Speaking of Pilot Sports, one (1!) of the 325/35R-23 rear tires on the beast retails for $526 at Tire Rack.

Since it is the Michelins pounding the pavement this is more of a joint French-German assault on mother earth.

We're also supposed to get the 707 hp 2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat soon. Considering the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has a street price of $85K per Edmunds TMV and is just a hair quicker than this to 60, I'd expect the Durango Hellcat would be similar, and an option for those that want to stay under triple digits and be a little louder and more raw.

A lot of people who buy those don't even know how fast they are, mostly soccer moms who want to up their neighbors.

I don't understand this thing. If you can afford this, you can afford a GLS 450 and an M2/Z4/some other $60K performance car. What is this thing's element? Who is it for? Naw I'm not impressed with physics and technology.

      Why not both?

These vehicles are also status symbols, and even if you're not going 0-60 in 3.6 seconds often, the fact is you COULD if you wanted to, people will know that and get hyped about it, and it gives it (and by extension you) street cred.

SUVs and big power are in right now, so its not like Mercedes is alone in recognizing this niche. Even Lamborghini has their rocket SUV, and frankly its a lot more livable to show up in than trying to get in and out of their coupes.

Let's put aside the ridiculousness of eating 6 figures of depreciation to drive a pointless vehicle to impress strangers. Plus not everyone is impressed. I see stuff like this and think "hmmm.... more money than sense. Prob just wanted the 'most expensive one'" At least something like a GLS Coupe has a sense of humor about it.

Plus if "street cred" (cringe) is the goal, why not a base GLS and, say, a C8 Corvette? A C8 would impress way more strangers, and be way way way way way way way way more fun to drive. I still don't understand who or what this is for

The C8 can't impress anyone you see when you're usually driving your GLS, and most people won't know you have two cars unless you put on a bumper sticker "my other car is a C8" lol!

For example, lets say you're some random Saudi prince and you're going out with your group. You could double-up in Huracans but heck in your 40s you might be embarrassed that you need to have someone help pull you out of the car since they can be hard to get in and out of. You might not even be able to get where you want, because there's a speed bump in the way and you have half an inch of ground clearance. Instead you could show up with four black GLS63s that can fit more of your crew and girls and arrive comfortably in style.

Luxury is expensive, and performance is expensive, and this is showing that you can afford to have both, and its in a package that is a lot more practical than a supercar so you get more utility out of it.

I couldn't afford one, but with a population approaching 8 billion people, there are plenty that can.

I went through the trouble of resetting my password to remind you that once upon a time, you drove a E90 323i and thought you were on top of the hill. That is all.

Wow, I can't imagine going through the trouble of resetting my password for a case of mistaken identity. The only E90s I've driven were 335is and I didn't think I was on top of any hill.

      Why not buy a GLS63 and a C8, and a Model S, and a 427 Stingray?

People dropping a hundred and fifty kilo-bucks on a new GLS63 likely don't have value for money at the top of their needs triangle.

But then if they pick the kids up from school in the GLS 450 they won't have the fastest minivan in the lineup.

Smart money is on the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (707 hp, $85k) or the SRT (475 hp, $67k) or the Durango SRT (same numbers as the SRT). It's like the Golf R - many people will think you're in a regular Cherokee, unless they look really hard. The Mercedes is for those that want everyone to know how much they spent.

I think I'd be embarrassed to let anyone know I spent 85 large on a Jeep, but okay.
