So I'm curious about actual new car buying by TCL folks, particularly for vehicles that get long threads about there development and launches.

Has anyone actually bought a Supra? or C8 Corvette yet for instance?

I know we have lots of RAV4 hybrids and a few Tellurides and such. There seem to be a LOT of Teslas. Plenty of Jeeps and maybe a Gladiator or 2?

Obviously economics plays into a lot of this. I'm sure many of us would LOVE to actually buy some of these cars but it's just not practical or feasible.

I don't mean this to be a shaming thread, quite the opposite, I genuinely wonder if some of the new cares we obsess over actually get purchased by TCL'ers.

I bought a brand new Fiesta ST when they first came out. I tried to help the small car manuel market, fat lot of good that did us

To be honest though, cars these days are so good that I feel a lot better buying used than I used to since they hold up so well. 2-3 years old, 30-50k-ish miles is where I'll spend my money going forward in all likelihood.

      A loving welcome from TCL

TCL prefers to promise to buy them used in 10 years, but then gets excited about new products that will be even better in 10 more years.

      I'd say so.

I've owned a few of the darlings purchased new, or a few years old.

I'm thinking of a C8 or a Supra next ironically.

As a result of Vortex input, I have bought:

      1. 1984 Rabbit GTi
      2. Turbo Caravan ES
      3. Focus ZX3
      4. GMT800s (2 of them)
      5. A Prius
      6. A Sienna SE
      7, A whole slew of Mk6s (including a GTI, an R, and a GLI)
      8. A Mk7 R

By far my biggest prize was the 1991 Taurus SHO Plus I bought. A car I still miss to this day.

Right now I am plotting my next move which would take me up into the M3/Giulia Quad market, and I can thank TCL for that burning desire too.

I was going to say, a few TCLr's have picked up new Giulias or Quadrifrogliolialuelos. They seem like great cars.

Yup, I have put my money where my mouth is several times. First off, I have participated in the supra and c8 threads, but they are vehicles I'm critical of, which means I'm unlikely to purchase either. So thread should be more specific: Have you purchased new a car that you were passionate for in various online threads? Yes, 3 times for me. A 2006 mkV GTI, no option car, a 2008 crossfire (not that this was a multipage thread type of car, but I always maintained an affinity towards it online), and lastly a 2012 mustang gt with the only option being the Brembo brake package.

The future is a bit more challenging for me. There are only two upcoming cars that really have my attention at the moment: Cayman gts 4.0 and the next Z. Obviously the price difference between the two is substantial. I'm excited for both about equally so I'm paying attention to both but I have no idea at this point if or where my money will be directed. If I go new for my next car though, it will only be between these two.

Yea I guess so. I bought my Fiesta ST but I don't think TCL had a lot of influence in that. Same with my M2. The plan is to replace the M2 with a Supra maybe some time next year.

Look at what I drive. I can't afford that ****.

That said I think it's a balance. I enjoy talking about cars I will never drive or own, but I've also been trying to temper my enthusiasm with practicality and honesty. For example I see no point in getting emotionally invested in whether or not a car I'll never be able to afford comes in stick or not. Makes no material difference. Bench racing is also silly. I evaluate speed on a pretty simple scale... slow, quick enough, satisfyingly fast, needlessly fast. If two cars are in the same category, then the qualitative aspects take priority. Again it just seems silly to me to quibble over something like a 10 second car vs an 11 second car.

So yea to a degree I think we obsess a bit too much about meaningless stuff (to me at least), even in cars we actually buy, but especially cars that we don't

I've bought cars that I lusted over in mags, online, etc, of course used, otherwise I would have never be able to afford them new, like the S6 and the 993. I thought I would never, ever, buy a new car and then I bought the R brand spanking new. I don't feel TCL had an influence on that one.

      Of course.

I found vwvortex and subsequently TCL because I fell in love with the MKV GTI when it first came out, and bought an '07 CPO at the end of 2008.

I bought a brand new 2013 Beetle once the package I wanted came out.

Then I went full mental and went to some of the greatest/worst/quirkiest hits of earlier '00s wagons and did 2 W8 6MT Passat wagons and then the infamous 4.2 V8 B6 S4.

My thing is I typically obsess for months up ahead of making a decision trying to as completely understand what it is I'm getting into before I finally pull the trigger.

And my favorite thing about this community is the shared experiences of some of the more awesome rides around here.

In my adult life I've owned a lot of enthusiast/TCL favorites but I'm gonna humble-brag and list them. But now with kids and such, I find myself less able to buy the fun stuff I'd like to

I ordered one of the first FR-S units 3 months before it was available based on the reviews/hype. Also ordered a Golf R to replace it once the kids got bigger also based on a lot of input from here (decided against a used 911 as well). Test drove a Boss 302 and looked for an SS (not avail in Canada) also due to CL.

It wasn't exactly the target of that much hype and anticipation here, but I bought a bright green Mazda2 as soon as they came out in the U.S., and didn't regret it. It gave me four years and over 60,000 miles of mostly happy motoring before I got tired of it and wanted something bigger and more comfortable.

According to what I've been able to snoop on Carfax, it's now enjoying its retirement in the Miami, Florida area.

Yes and no. Several of my car purchases were influenced by this place with varying degrees of success.

-2002 VW GTI 337: I was already considering a GTI and put down on one specifically because of this site and Jamie's efforts to bring the car here. Ownership experience: DISAPPOINTING AND FRUSTRATING

-2006 Mazda Miata: Nothing to do with this site and everything to do with my previous Miata and Mazda experience. Ownership experience: LOVED IT! (while I had it)

-2005 Subaru Legacy GT (used): Impending divorce so I had to sell the Miata and get a sedan. Bought the Subaru based largely on TCL fawning. Ownership experience: POOR

-2008 Mazda Speed3: Couldn't stand the Subaru, and so I bought the SP3 based partly on my past experience with Mazda and partly based on TCL experience with the 3. Ownership experience: LOVED IT BUT OUTGREW IT

-2012 Dodge Challenger R/T 5.7: It had nothing to do with TCL, and several people here tried to wave me off. Ownership experience: LOVED IT BUT GAVE ME A HORSEPOWER ADDICTION

-2015 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack: Bought mostly because of my last experience, but this time with much TCL encouragement. Ownership experience: LUUUUURVE IT!

Wife gave me the go ahead to get a mid life crisis car when I turn 40. I'm torn on what I want to get. Do I be 100% selfish and get a 2 seat sports car? We have a 2 year old, will be 4 when I turn 40, and I kind of want something the whole family can enjoy. So do I get a fun classic car with 4 big seats for cruising? Do I get a project car me and my son can work on as he gets older? Do I get a dodge challenge or charger for HP fun with 4 seats? Do I get an electric? Maybe a project beetle to electric conversion? So many choices. So many opinions.
