With all the lease returns coming in, low mile AMG-GTs are hitting the market in the low $60k - into $70k range all day. Twin Turbo V8 just a tune away from 500hp+. To me, this is the bargain of the year as these cars hovered around $130k+ new and even then, seem to look even more expensive than that. So if you are a lucky soul dropping $70k on a new toy, daily, which would you rather?

Sorry GM, I'm going AMG-GT on this one.

If the AMG GT drives anything like the SLS, I'd take that instead of the C8. Tail out hooligan car is a lot of fun.

I would never consider these cars, but if for some reason I had to, the styling of the Benz would get me behind the wheel for a test drive before the C8. I saw a white C8 a week ago and it just didn't look right to me. I'd rather have whatever c7 manual I could get for the same price over either.

It's as beautiful as the C8 is ugly. The drive almost doesn't matter, they're both fast and competent

That's a tough one. I can't say I'd really go for either in that price range, but push comes to shove on a car this nice and expensive I'd rather have a new car I get to spec out and break-in myself than a lease return. I get the TCL "let someone else eat the depreciation" logic, but I'm not a fan of lease returns as they're new enough they're still depreciating quickly but old enough to not be perfect.

Hard to pay $70k for something used, but I'm going with the AMG.

Wish it were a gullwing SLS though.

Hard choice. I don't know why I am more disappointed that the C8 does not have a manual but don't mind the AMG-GT being auto-only. The C8 will likely be a lot less $$$ for maintenance and repairs. However, there will be so many Corvettes around here in Metro Detroit whereas the GT will be more uncommon.

F-it, I don't drive enough to really worry about maintenance costs and repairs...give the AMG-GT

are there any catastrophic problems with the a,g? seems like almost every really high end performance car always has some totally asinine catastrophic engine design flaw...

      Can't be as bad as a S85 V10 from a BMW M5 can it?

Used cars are always a better value as they will suffer lower depreciation, and the Mercedes also has an exclusivity factor that's really important to some people so that they can feel more special over a higher mass production vehicle (which can also be a downside as it typically means harder to find and more expensive service and parts long term).

The new C8 will objectively be the higher performance vehicle and is available with a 7-speed manual which will make it a much more engaging vehicle to drive though compared to the Mercedes that will be more of a "point and shoot" luxury/image vehicle.

So there are pros and cons, but either way I can't really relate since I can't see myself spending over even half your budget for a used vehicle and would be more likely to purchase a used C7 for half the price and still have more than enough performance to scare myself silly.

I like both of these but I’m hard pressed to think why the answer isn’t always 911. $70k buys plenty of Carrera S in pick your generation.

kind of boring? from a style standpoint at least, a 911 is a snoozefest compared to either of these

Oh fail, my bad. C7 had the 7-speed manual, and I didn't realize they discontinued it for the C8. Chevy sold more manual transmission 7th gen Corvettes than all variants of the 911, Cayman, and Boxter combined Porsche sales for the same period. I hadn't been following the launch that closely despite having a Vette myself because it'll be a decade before I could afford a depreciated C8 anyway.

TT, I like the way you're trending, first thr convertible and now hot as fek performance cars. You've come back to the brotherhood of the Holy Motor Oil And Lead Footed Saints

I like both of your options and it got me to thinking. It's like watches, the Mercedes is like a named fine time peice and the Corvette is like a G Shock Mudmaster. Both tell time, it's about how dirty you're going to get in it

As a Mercedes F1 fan I've often said how much I like the AMG GT, but I would go Corvette and track it. The AMG is awful fancy and pretty, I would baby it too much.

Neither comes with a manual transmission, so I honestly wouldn't buy either.

However, if I had to pick, I'd go with the C8 since I generally hate driving cars with long front hoods.

I haven't heard of any with the 4L twin turbo V-8. The only thing I'd really be concerned with is heat-related damage to underhood components. The hot-V design might be good for turbo spoolup and for emissions, but it puts a ton of heat right in the middle of the engine bay. I know that the BMW and Audi hot-Vs have some issues with heat related component failure.

To be fair BMW had problems with water pumps and rod bearings

      I still want one

      Give me the C8.

I've driven the GTS. Felt like a German C7. Not bad, but I'll go for something different.

What is your repair and maintenance budget?

      Big one? AMG
      Small one? Corvette

I cannot imagine how crazy expensive the Benz would be to fix after the warranty ends.

There's a guy in one of my local track groups that runs an AMG-GT and it sounds amazing. I think if I had to choose between the two, it would ultimately come down to what the intended use was. If I'm looking for a nice GT car to go on cruises with, AMG-GT. If I'm looking for more track work, C8 all day.
