Now, just four days later, the company has postponed the unveiling due to what it simply described as the “recent global situation.”
While Lexus didn’t elaborate, there’s been one story that has dominated headlines all this week. That’s the death of George Floyd who died on May 25th after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
The killing of yet another unarmed black man, who was clearly in distress, sent shock waves across the United States. Protests have occurred in cities across the country and some have turned violent and resulted in looting.
The protests continue and have been gaining traction globally as there have been gatherings in Berlin, London, Paris and New Zealand – just to name a few.
Toyota released a statement about social injustice
The outcry has been so loud that several automakers have even weighed in. Among them was Toyota who released a statement on social injustice saying, “We all have witnessed unacceptable bigotry and a lack of education around the COVID-19 virus to more recent societal issues of violence, killings and racism against African Americans in Minnesota, Kentucky, Georgia and elsewhere. These events may be difficult for many of us to process and our thoughts are with all those directly affected and their families and friends.”
Toyota went on to say “We stand behind our commitment to diversity and inclusion, and we remain steadfast in our belief for equality, respect and inclusivity for all people.”
While it’s possible the coronavirus may have played some role in the decision, the car was going to be given a digital debut so that shouldn’t have been much of a factor. It’s also worth noting that other events have been cancelled as a result of the protests including a look a the Playstation 5.
Getting back to the IS, Lexus said a new date will be announced soon. The company has been tight-lipped about the model, but it is expected to feature new styling as well as carryover powertrains.
The 2021 Lexus IS will not be an all-new model, and as such it will not be built on Toyota's TNGA-L luxury rear-drive architecture. Instead, it will soldier on with the existing New N platform introduced back in 2013. This doesn't mean it'll drive the same, though. We're told the chassis has been upgraded, and the suspension has had a thorough rework, with the new IS being the first Lexus product developed at Toyota's new Shimoyama facility, a Nürburgring-like R&D center in the mountains outside Toyota City, Japan.Although the bones of the car have had work done, we expect very few changes under the hood. Our understanding is the current engines will carry over. This means a base 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, a midgrade 3.5-liter V-6 making 260 hp and 236 lb-ft, and a high-performance 3.5-liter V-6 making 311 hp and 277 lb-ft. All will be had with rear-drive and an eight-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive available only on V-6 models.
If you were hoping the death of the larger GS sedan might mean the return of the IS F sport sedan, keep hoping. As of right now, there's no IS F in the cards, though with the IS having to cover for the GS now, Lexus is considering a new range-topping IS 500. Rather than the GS F's 5.0-liter V-8, the IS 500 would borrow the LS 500's 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 good for 416 hp and 442 lb-ft. Lexus product planners are still deciding if this model makes sense, so you definitely won't see it at launch. Start rattling cages if you want to see it come to market.

Yeah I am having trouble understanding how this is a completely new generation. However, this is possibly the best implementation of the predator grille yet, although I personally don't have a problem with the general concept outside of the horrendous SUVs. The light bar at the back is a tad much from certain angles, but overall looks good. If you liked the last car, you will love this.
That interior looks...... the.... same? Again, I already liked the outgoing gen inside and out a lot so I may be biased, but don't break what ain't broke. The big V6 option was always a strong powertrain and this still remains a solid option if you want a luxurious car with all the bells and whistles in this size but with a bit of power.
The tail light preview got me excited to see what this will be like... but just like all major car companies, new releases under the $100k segment are downgraded designs created for a sheep class of people.

The car looks good. More evolutionary than revolutionary, but that’s ok.. I enjoyed the previous gen’s appearance. Still not certain if I’d ever choose one, but with Infiniti becoming a brand more along the lines of tarted-up Nissans, and similarly priced options from BMW/Mercedes being quite lame in comparison... I’m sure enough people will go for the IS by virtue of its higher spec of options, more exciting design, and good ol’ Toyota reliability.
