I love the color (maybe I'm crazy), like the manual - checks all the boxes for me. I've been scouting Rs for a while and would love to have one that stands out a bit from the crowd. Doesn't hurt that I'm a UTK grad.

I'm sure the price is inflated by the special color, but it's not a bad deal.

      Wait for Max_Download

The clutch is the same as my 230 hp GLI (which is barely adequate as-is) so expect it to go prematurely. That said the R:. has much better gearing then my Bonneville salt flat mobile.

They used to have 3 - had a turqoise one and a pink one too, all manuel i think

It's been there for months (since October) so you should be able to work that to your advantage.

Whatever you do, avoid sales wench Madison, I was going to buy a new car there once and wanted the positive equity from my Coyote I was trading in (~$6k) back as a check instead of putting it down towards the new car and she outright accused me of trying to pocket financed dollars, lol wut? She's a ****ing idiot clown. I ended up buying from a different dealer who had no issue understanding that the positive equity in a vehicle belongs to me, not the bank I'm borrowing money from for a completely different new car. Talk about lowest common denominator ****tard.

Don't get it if you only like boring cars.

Seriously though the only real knock is the price, I think people were getting NEW 19 R's for that price, sure they didn't have Spectrum color but a used R wtih 5K miles might be a tough sell at that price.

I love my '19 6MT R, it does everything well. Even the 19" wheels that scared me seem to be holding up fine and the ride is really good in comfort or normal dampening modes. While I'd love a Spectrum color I don't think I could have paid the $3000CAD upcharge. On a $100,000 Porsche, maybe. On a $42,000 VW, nope.

You should buy it because it's a (1) manual (2) Golf R (3) in Magma Orange.

You're not crazy for liking the color -- I almost bought a Magma Orange GTI Fahrenheit way back in 2011 in still regret it.

If you want an orange golf r, go for it! It looks pretty much as new and if you want orange, I doubt there are many alternatives. Would be nice to not have to pay near sticker for used one, but it is what it is. I had a Golf R for about a year and a half (18 Indium Gray DSG). It did everything well, I loved the quality, the size, the tech, the economy, it handled very well but it was lacking in excitement, I blame the FWD based AWD system. If I was faced with buying a ~40k daily that was new or near new, I'd probably look at a stinger gt or maybe a lightly used S4/5.

I think you should go for it. Golf R is a fun car with solid performance credential to boot. I think the price is a bit high imho. See if you could get another $2,500 off asking price. Pandemic special if you will.

Yeah OP as a used car there’s a lot of cars I’d buy used for the same $39k price.

$39k will get you a very nice 2019-20 Mustang GT, if you shop carefully.

Because that color will be cool for about 6 weeks.

I don't think it is or was available on Mk7 Golf R's. I know a lot of people don't like that, but on the flip side, less weight where it counts and no chance of a leaky VW pano roof.

Yes, I would agree it is a big selling point.
      No moonroof means:
      More headroom
      Less weight
      More solid roof structure
      No leaks, rattles, whistles, etc.
      No moonroof-related repair bills
      Better safety and security

You've already stated why YOU SHOULD BUY THE CAR. The color and the manual transmission.

And, if you're a hatch guy, this is really a no-brainer.

I'm sure if you work a lil' bit hard, you can get some dough shaved off the MSRP/asking price.

      Good Luck!

    20. 05-25-2020 08:37 AM #19
You should not buy it because it is too of a lateral move from your current car (if your profile is up to date). You will lose a ton of money on the trade it for essentially the same car but heavier. Keep in mind right now they are selling leftover 2019 GTI/GLI models @ deep discounts. I also think that color will get old really quick. Keep the GTI.

I think the fact that you're crowdsourcing confirmation kind of speaks to you not really wanting the car, but feeling like you should because the internet says you should

The GTI/R are TCL darlings (this is still VWVortex after all) but I can definitely understand why someone wouldn't be blown away by them in real life. They are not bad cars but they are pretty anodyne and compromised. I'd almost call them an acquired taste in the context of all the other ~$30-40K cars you can buy.

I don't get the Mustang GT, or equivalent, comparisons going on here. Yeah sure, you could get a Mustang GT for the same price, so what? Apples and oranges, one car is fast fun and practical, one is fast exciting and a head turner. If you need or want something practical a Mustang GT, Veloster N, BRZ or whatever else "more fun car for the same price car" just aren't going to cut it.

Whether the R is worth the upcharge from a GTI is up to the OP. Both are great cars, can't go wrong with either IMO.

From reading your post, in bold above it seems you're really into this car so I'm going to be an enabler and say get it. Life is short, do all you want to do now that doesn't land you in prison

IMO Golfs are bland as fek, the orange pops and it looks way more interesting in that color. People saying you'll tire of it, you won't if you really dig it. How does grey and white do for getting tired of a color?
I've had my Molten Orange FiST since 2016 and still love it. I like contrast of the black trim against the orange, the Golf R you like has this too.

Scratch that itch, get that car.
