Usually, car companies introduce new engines with redesigns or major refreshes. Makes sense, after all, to have everything as "all-new" as possible. But the ancient Nissan Frontier is due to be redesigned in the next year, yet received a completely new engine and transmission for 2020.

The opposite happens as well, most infamously with the 2010 Mustang, which was a noticeable facelift, yet kept the old 4.0L V6 and 4.6L V8 until the new engines came for 2011.

So, name some other cars where a new engine was introduced a year before/after a redesign, but not at the same time.

Don't know if it was one year, but the last of the Chevrolet Cavaliers got the Ecotec 4 cylinder engine before the whole car was replaced with the Cruze.

I recall having an Ecotec-equipped Cavalier as a rental car, and the engine was the only good thing about it. Previous Cavaliers (with the pushrod engine) were rubbish in every possible way.

2001 BMW 330i; in the U.S. we didn't get the facelift body and new engine together until 2002.

24V VR6 came in the middle of the MKIV generation. I don't remember the year, 2002 maybe??

In 1992 the DSM twins Talon/Eclipse got rid of the pop up head lights but still used the 6bolt crank 4g63. The next year started the crankwalk engines

IMO, the most famous of them all in recent history.

      The 2007 335i

The 2011 E90 335i ditched the twin turbo N54 for the new single turbo N55, then was replaced by the F30 335i for 2012.

The all-new 2015 C400 was immediately replaced by the 2016 C450 AMG which had more power.

Yeah, that gen debuted as a 2010 and the Skyactiv was offered from 2012 on.

The B5 Audi A4 was available with the new 30v V6 in the "pre-facelift" body for about a year (or maybe half a year?) before they rolled out the facelift changes. This was around '98-99.

Pretty much every BMW since the 1980s.

It's a smart way to keep annual expenditure on development down.

But that's just a 1 year model, it didn't precede a redesign or refresh.

There was also the one-hit wonder '06 330i which has the 255-hp N52B30 that got axed when the 335i came around.

      The F25 X3 got the N20 4-cylinder a year after it debuted.

Yup, the Skyactiv got introduced in '12, 2 years before the 3 got redesigned. The 2nd gen actually dropped in 2009 as an early '10 model - I had a '10 that I bought in '09.

The demand for an AWD system in the Chrysler Pacifica is strong enough for Chrysler to have a special AWD Launch model planned for this model year, even though the facelift isn't coming until the 2021s start rolling out.

      I'll go with the 1966 - 1967 Lamborghini 400 GT Interim.

Only 23 were made, using the newer and more powerful 4.0L V-12 in place of the 350 GT's 3.5L V-12, but still used the smaller 350 GT body. Soon Lamborghini moved into producing the 400 GT 2+2 which had an expanded body style to accommodate a larger and more useful interior.

      350GT and 400GT Interim interior -

400GT 2+2 interior with updates and expanded rear seat area -

Cadillac made the Allante from '87-'93, but it only got the Northstar V8 in the final model year.

      Other thoughts/musings:

C5 Corvette Z06 got the 405 hp LS6 a year after it was introduced. Pontiac GTO got the LS2 the year after it came to the US.

The E36 M3 got the S52 a year after it was intro'd in the US

The '09 WRX got the higher output 265-hp EJ255 a year after it was redesigned.

The new-for-'02 Ram 1500 did NOT have a Hemi in it. That didn't arrive until '03. The top dawg engine in '02 was the old 360 V8. Conversely, the 360 was only put into the ZJ Grand Cherokee in the year before it was redesigned, and the WJ never offered that engine.

Surprised the Supra hasn't been mentioned yet.

Years of anticipation, years of planning, it debuts with a rated 320hp version of the B58. 2021, it gets the better version with signifcantly more power and (i think) forged internals. Not sure what they were thinking. From a sales perspective they should have at least waited a year to drop the updated motor.

2006-early 2008 mk5 GTI had FSI engine (timing belt, flat tappet cam follower for HPFP)
later 2008 - 2009 mk5 GTI had the TSI engine. (timing chain, roller cam follower for HPFP). You wouldn't know from the outside besides a 0.5" drop in ride height. I don't think you can even call it a refresh.

2010 is when they rolled out the mk6 GTI. Same TSI engine, same PQ35 platform, but definitely a redesign.

Until a year in when 90% of the N54 cars had HPFP, water pump and wastegate issues galore.

      The Volvo S60

Volvo released the new facelifted version in 2014 but then debuted the T5 Drive E 4 cylinder engine in 2015. Then they also debuted a 2015.5 model after, which had a new infotainment. It was a bit messy and probably would have been better if they waited and did all of this at the same time.

Also? That's the very engine being referenced when the 335i was posted. Or perhaps do you mean how 325i was replaced by the 328i in 2007 as well?
You think you hate it now, but wait 'til you drive it.
