Is it just me, or are the build&price sections of manufacturer websites getting worse every year?

It's like they are intentionally making them harder to navigate. Then they have banners or other things cutting off the images of the vehicles and information you want to read for options. They need to go back to the simple formats of the late 2000s.

I agree. I find them harder to navigate and I never really know the option list on the chosen model.

...and why are the Canadian versions so much worse? Bad enough they don’t let us have half the available vehicles but then they also preload the vehicles with crap options we don’t want to drive the price up...plus then we have to suffer through their out of date configurators too...
Might be able to tell it’s a hot button issue with me.

The ones I've seen look like they're being designed for better use on mobile, but they kind of half-assed it or tried to compromise so it looks wonky on both.

They're optimized for touch screens & iPads, since manufacturers make that assumption about their sheep (customers).

This is 90% of the problem these days on many consumer product websites. There's such an effort to be touch-screen and mobile browser friendly, that the functionality of the website goes to crap. I'd love to go back 5 years where there was a full website that worked well, and a mobile website that was stripped down but also worked well on a mobile device.

I've been running into this issue on most dealership websites. The search filters are damn near useless on a mobile browser.

Yup, and not just consumer products. San Francisco's website is a made-for-mobile abomination

Just playing with BMW's build tool... have to use my laptop's touch screen to scroll through the options

I imagine many of their clients look at their site on Macbooks. Stupid oversight

yeah but...don't they hire website builders to construct a fully functioning easy-to-use-regardless-of-platform website??

...kinda their job, no? This shouldn't be a problem for the tiniest ****tiest automaker, nevermind every last giant automaker....

Handa Canada 's has got to be the biggest joke of a website.

Nobody wants to pay for development and maintenance on 2 sites, so they don't bother making a version for real computers because the "take rate" is extremely low.

The number of people browsing on a real computer is about the same as the number buying new cars with manual transmissions.

They can get stats on who's viewing their site with what OS and browser. I changed my browser UserAgent string to tell their server I'm on a desktop when using a tablet. Don't think it'll get them to put more effort into desktop website version. I recently bought a new car with manual. Don't think that'll be enough to get them offer more manuals either.

Ironically, it seems to me that smartphones have dumb'd down the interface experience.

      Bubblegumpop, fun but ultimately shallow.

In the mobile vs. desktop arena, pc usage has dropped steadily but will probably level out and maintain a certain %

Although smartphones will most likely continue to climb.

Yet they still all suck on mobile devices as well.
So they just are crap in general. Most likely because most people just show up at a dealership and point at something shiny.

To be fair, you need to have young eyes to easily see everything on a tiny smartphone screen.
I like desktop because screen big.
      screen big easy see text.

While I also miss the early days of the build your own pages, I just built up a new BMW X3 and found it pretty easy once you step back, take a breath, and see what they're trying to do. Note I'm also using Google Chrome. The only issue I noticed was the fewer available options that can be ordered a-la-carte. Remember when you could check the box to add Bi-Xenon headlights for $700? Now if you want to upgrade your headlights to the better LED units, you gotta order the $7,750 Executive Package.

I just go to the press/media pages, like http://pressroom.toyota.com

You can get detailed specs that are hardly ever available on the consumer site, like
