i money shifted my spec car on track. top of third, into 2nd instead of 4th. engine spun up over 10krpm (based on where i saw the needle), and it seemed fine ... 2 laps later it dropped a valve. failed retainer.
so, i had the head repaired, sanded the dent in the piston flat, and ran the engine for another season. cost me about 500 bucks total
Ooof that video is rough. When I shift from 3rd to 4th, I move my hand so that my thumb is down and my pinky is up, palm on the side of the shifter, so when I pull back quickly any mistake will get me 6th instead of 2nd.

Got lucky in my GLI once going from 3rd-4th but wound up in 2nd. Something didn't quite feel right so I didn't totally dump the clutch pedal which allowed the clutch to take some force and slow everything down just enough to wind up bouncing off the limiter. scary moment though.

Driving my turd truck home this afternoon, I found myself concentrating on shifting with an emphasis on the thumb down thing SoS posted.
If you are going at a speed that causes you to run off the road before ESC can provide any assistance, you may not experience the benefits of ESC
I grenaded my motor on my M3 right after I turbo'd it. I was going through a corner wound out in 4th gear with the motor all torqued up, shifted and hit 3rd instead of 5th. Bent a bunch of valves, screwed up the cylinder wall and a bunch of other fun stuff. Cost me a solid 5k to get it back together. Also, this was a common problem.
