Since this is a car forum, I won't go into how big of an influence he had on me as a young kid learning how to play the drums and now as a professional musician. What is relevant is that in his spare time he was also an automotive and motorcycle enthusiast, who documented his long motorcycle journeys, and penned two essays on his foray into the 24 Hours of Lemons, linked below.

      Oh well, crap.
      He was very talented.

Rush was (and it is) one of my favorite bands.

He passed away from brain cancer on Monday or Tuesday but it was only made public today.

This is pretty awful news. His essays about how his motorcycle trips eased the pain of his wife’s passing were truly great.

His drumming drove that band’s style. Very sad to hear he passed.

RIP. Got to see him live once with Rush, over 20 years ago. Still remember it like it was yesterday. The guy worked to improve himself, including as drummer, until the very end.

What a legend. He will be missed.

I remember watching a special about Rush past year and a big part of it was about Peart and the complicated drumming arrangements he implemented into the songs. Sad to read this. I found this car from his web site:

      http://www.neilpeart.net/index.php/s...nd-lemon-slug/

Peart said "Tom Sayer" was one of the hardest Rush songs to play:

Somewhat relevant to this forum - someone named David Wood just posted this comment on CBC's website:

In the early 1980s my music-averse brother-in-law did a week-long course driving open-wheel race cars. At the end of the week all the mechanics came up and started asking his student partner for his autograph. My brother-in-law was puzzled by this. His partner was quiet, intelligent and fun to work with but had given no indication that he had any celebrity-status. So my brother-in-law goes up to his partner and asks:

      “Neil, are you famous?”

I am sorry to hear that he is gone. He was a living music legend and for most of his life, he was a motorcyclist.

If you ever have the chance to read his book "Ghost Rider, Travels on the Healing Road" you can get a sense for the horrible tragedies that he endured and overcame in his life.

I prefer to think of him like this.

I haven't read it, though I really should. I think he has several books out. I remember reading some articles about his motorcycle travels after his first wife and daughter died

RIP Neil...you inspired a lot of people.
As a bass player I spent hours listening to Rush trying to master Geddy’s wicked bass lines.

My high schools drumline worshiped RUSH and I never got it until like 10 years ago when I watched the documentary and I was like wow every person in the band was excellent at what they do.

Sad to see a really impressive and influential drummer pass.

Let me see if I can add something befitting of this thread:

Ugh this is a punch in the gut. Probably my favorite band of all time, so sad to lose such talent.

Rush was a huge part of my (musical) life for 15-20 years and are still my favorite band. It makes me feel old knowing one of my idols has passed.

I fired up Beyond The Lighted Stage last night.

      The new guy!

He and Rush were my coming of age music as a drummer. This is so sad to hear.
