I used to love watching the coverage back in the day on Speedvision/Speed channel but I admittedly lost interest a bit when they started moving the race around. My interest was reignited after showing my 8yo vids of the huge race trucks so now he is hooked too.

Cool racing and all but my inner cartographer is having trouble with this.

Dakar is in way far West Africa. Now the Dakar race is in the Middle East?

Germans are white people. Look up #84 on the list of things white people like: Gear. Lots of Gear. We even have gear farkles over here. -Atomicalex

Upon my word I have had as much excitement on a car as in the air, especially since the R.F.C. have had women drivers. -James Byford McCudden

It was held in South America from 2009 until last year as a result of security concerns in Africa. I wonder if they will ever do a true Paris to Dakar again. Probably unlikely.

Last year it was in South Africa. They changed it several years ago because of terrorism fears and now it goes to different locations vs the original route

I'll add to what others have said. Dakar is now more of a brand than a destination. Similar to Le Mans racing used to be (American Le Mans) where they didn't necessarily race on the French track.

They may go back to west Africa some day but not for the next 5 years (Saudi) and I imagine they will go somewhere new after that too. I'm hoping for someplace like Mongolia for when they are done with the Saudi Arabia stint.
