Anyone know what this sound is? Belt? 2017 GTI PP 6spd 23k miles.

      Video exceeds file size...

Sounds like a little bird chirping. Only happens at idle. First, I thought the sound was isolated to cold starts but I'm starting to hear it after the engines warmed up.

Maybe wastegate rattle. An audio clip or video would come in handy.

I experience something very similar when my 1.9 TDI timing belt tensioner bearing was going out. At first, it was only when cold. But the gradually, the sound got more persistant even when warm.

I would check all the belts and bearings. That includes all timing belts (if you have a belt), alternator, a/c, and any other roller bearings in the path. If you're lucky, it's just the belt. But most likely, it is the one of the bearings.

I believe you can just take off the serpentine belt (NOT timing belt) and start the engine. If the noise goes away, then you can isolate the sound to all the components related to the serpentine belt. That's how I diagnosed my 1.9 TDI engine.

The waterpump bearing of the 2.0T sometimes makes a chirping noise.
