My buddy got a beater 2.8 Audi A4 quattro 5sp.

He had an engine knock, put some oil in it, and it went away. It came back the next day, louder than it was, the oil temp got high, while the coolant temp stayed low. We limped it somewhere to park overnight, the battery wouldn't stay charged, the car would die if you didn't keep the RPMs up, it would stall if you let it idle. Is it totally fried and now a 2.7t swap? Or is there a chance that an oil change, checking the oil catch screen, and checking the alternator will solve it?
