      Hello All,

My VCDS should be here tomorrow from ross-tech, and I plan to use it first to diagnose some shifting issues that I am having in my MK4 Jetta GLS 09A. (No shift to second / third unless using super light throttle.)

I've looked at the Wiki, and searched around, but I didn't find much in the way of guidance in terms of diagnostic procedures for the 09A in VCDS.

      http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...smission_(09A)

Research into the symptoms leads me to believe that there is a good chance this is a solenoid issue.

Does anyone have any tips or resources to provide as I dive into VCDS to investigate prior to purchasing a solenoid kit from cobratransmissions? Ideally I would like some additional verification that the issues that I am having are solenoid / valve body related, rather than mechanical, such as bands or friction plates.

      Depends on what VCDS shows?
You are correct with solenoids being a common problem.
But I recommend rebuilt Valve body with noids. There are other common problems that may happen later.
V/B and noids is about all you can do to service a 09A.
If you have speed sensor codes then trans has to come out and be disassembled to change all 3 sensors. Same is true for filter.
You also need to remove whole front end to get to the trans pan to change V/B or noids.
Basically you do V/B with noids and if you have to remove trans and rebuild the unit because of other problems you wouldn't want to do all that without doing V/B anyway.
So if you have no speed sensor codes V/B with noids is next step.
Cobra is a good place to get noids but as I said V/B and noids come together and that I would buy elsewhere.
Don't buy a V/B with noids from ebay or china if you don't spend $500 it's cheap stuff.

      good Luck

Thanks for the info stan067. I'll get VCDS up and running tonight and post up the results once I have them. Hopefully I can get a good understanding of what's going on in the transmission to determine next steps.

At this time I don't have any codes for other parts of the transmission, so I may attempt an in-car solenoid change to see how it works. For $250 I can't go too far wrong and this isn't my daily so I can take my time with it.

      Auto Scan Below.

OBDII Codes currently displaying via OBDII tool are P0732 and P0733

Prior codes shown on OBDII were P3081, P0411, and P0420. All of these went away after installing the coolant temp sensor and connecting the SAI Pump hose.

My primary goal is to get it shifting properly, I'm not really concerned with the other things.

Any suggestions on next steps for diagnostics?
