It is what it is. Stop being like those people who say coupes cannot be 4 doors or that all vehicles without a traditional trunk are hatchbacks.

      Cadillac Escalade/ESV | Chevy Tahoe/Suburban | GMC Yukon/XL
      Ford Expedition/Maxx | Lincoln Navigator/L
      Infiniti QX80 | Nissan Armada
Lexus GX | Toyota 4 Runner
Lexus LX | Toyota Land Cruiser
      Mercedes G
      Toyota Sequoia
      Jeep Wrangler

I think these are the remaining BOF contenders. May be a few more, but not many.

Add Jeep Wrangler and subtract Grand Cherokee and Durango

I'm surprised Toyota keeps making the 4Runner, but then I'm not. Seems like they sold about 140k last year. Even my wife and I are considering a 4Runner.

The Kia Telluride is nice and all, but we need something rugged and tough.

In a world of unibody CUV's the 4Runner is a relic in the best way possible. Similar to small two seat sports cars with manual transmissions. They serve no real purpose besides bringing miles of smiles.

So while a CUV will do 99.98% of what most of America would ask of it, I'm happy you still have options such as the 4Runner and Wrangler. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. But as long as the customer base stays strong, you can bet it's not going anywhere.

4runner is bucking the trend. I think when it gets the updated Toyota Safety Suite and ACP/AA Infotainment for 2020 it will just keep rolling. 2018 was it's biggest sales year ever. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_4Runner

I feel like this is a case of diminishing bof 2 row SUVs making this much more appealing over time. In 2010 when this gen 4runner debuted, it only sold 46,531 units. Fast forward to 2018 sales total of 139,694, and get ready to scratch your head. The car is 9 years old and it's selling almost 3x as well as it was when it was new.

The Explorer was an SUV until they made it unibody.

I'd say the XJ was also a CUV.

Big difference with the XJ is solid axles, few other CUVs have those.

Gas is a lot cheaper now than then. When it was $3-4+/gallon, Priuses were selling at MSRP or over, not with tons of incentives like they are now.

You're not wrong, but that doesn't take away from it being a unibody, and thus a crossover.

Like everything else, you can have different grades of fabrics, leathers, and plastics. Thickness, material, texture, etc.
But we're not talking 80's E class or EmKayFour soft touch plastic. We're discussing the sturdiness of interiors of today's Japanese, US and Korean SUVs. IMHO, they are pretty much all the same.

Meh, I look at them as guidelines, not rules. To me, the XJ being unibody with solid axles makes it an SUV just like a Porsche 911 having back seats doesn't prevent it from being a sports car.

Yeah, but Ford and every car magazine out there refers to it as an SUV still. I think at this point we are frame fluid.

I think it's because it's a BOF SUV and its 1GR-FE engine is bulletproof. These things can easily last up to 350k miles. Gas is also cheaper. In Toyota's defense, no need to change the formula that has been working for such a long time.

Like it was mentioned, sure the Telluride can do what 99% of Americans want, but I'm in the 1% that does everything outdoors so I'd rather have a BOF truck or SUV that can take anything.

iirc, the 4Runner still won't get the safety suite in the next MY.

It doesn't have the full 2.0 package but it got a lot of updates for 2020

Radar cruise (not full speed, works down to 25 MPH)
Lane departure warning (no steering assist)
      Automatic braking with pedestrian detection
      Auto high beams

You can see the radar in the grille - I guess they had to use a different sensor since these don't have the oval Toyota badge on the front
