There is a new patent filed for the front crash structure, and it appears to be for a front mid engined car. Could this be the RX-9 we’ve been waiting for?

That is most definitely RWD and front-mid engine. We can only hope that it's a new RX.

Interesting plot twist... Could it be PHEV? BEV with range extender?

Well, it's something fairly serious. It's running double A arms instead of McStruts. They're more costly and take ip more room, so they aren't arbitrarily throwing them onto any ol' thing.

It's also far too short for the upcoming inline 6, so I'd rule that out.

I seriously doubt Mazda is doing another RX with only a rotary, so I'd bet on a full EV or a PHEV with a wankel range extender.
I gave up dailing old and rare cars and became a normie.

If another rotary is ever produced from anybody, it would almost have to be a hybrid. That would solve the torque issue at least, in addition to other things.

You're most probably correct, unless Mazda has any rotary engineering breakthroughs now, I can't picture them using it in an environment that's slowly shifting away from ICE.

From what I've read recently that's exactly what they're likely doing. They even supposedly bought the Wankel/range extender tech from Audi, so they may have some new jumping off point to solve some age old rotary problems.

      We'll see.

Could it be the next gen Miata?

I mean unfortunately, that's what it kind of looks like. With room for just a 4 banger in there . . .

Cool, I wanna see a rotary electric motor. Will it shoot sparks out of the tail pipe and how are they going to add oil to it?

An electric motor with no torque. Brilliant!

I’d like to see an electric motor that wasn’t a rotary. Like a half rotate electric motor. That would be something.

I read somewhere that Mazda also patented a new turbo for a wankel engine.
So probably they are not thinking about a hybrid (yet)

How about a bunch of linear actuators running a crankshaft?

Indeed. I don’t care if it’s a Wankel, piston engine, hybrid or pure electric. This car is so beautiful it needs to exist at the customer level.

The rotary engine is dead, it's a bad design, blah, blah, blah, as a car guy I find them interesting:

I don't see any signs of water cooling, but it does have something that looks superficially like fins on the cylinders.

Gear Patrol, which has as much cred as Paw Patrol has sighted Autocar, which has as much cred as Entertainment Tonight, as a source stating the Mazda rotary engine is back. Autocar released this amazing information on a social media site. In China. So massive amounts of grains of salt should be passed around and taken:

"It’s happening, folks: Mazda is bringing back the rotary engine. According to Autocar, the company released an announcement on Chinese social media that it will reveal a new generation of its iconic powertrain later this week.

Mazda head honcho Mitsuo Hitomi previously confirmed would use a rotary engine as a range extender for its first electric car, expected to debut this year — but he also suggested further, more exciting applications of the rotary engine to come."
