I haven't noticed any issues with our (Super White) Corolla, but got this letter in the mail today about peeling paint. I can't say I've noticed this on vehicles around here but after Googling it, it looks to be a pretty massive potential issue with 1.7+ million cars affected, going as far back as January 2007. Underneath the letter I received is the information going out to dealers which has a breakdown of all the vehicles affected (including a small number of Lexus GXs).

Now, if I could only get the failing (neglected) clearcoat on my Yaris roof fixed...

I was surprised to see the 4Runner, Lexus GX and Scions on the list as they are made in Japan.

I will say that the paint on the Corolla is just okay. It's kind of flat and scratches if you just brush up on it.

Interesting. I was looking at very clean Super White 2014 4Runner, when my wife noticed paint chipping around the fender flares (they're separate pieces). It looked like built up polish/wax/sealant, but upon closer inspection with a flashlight, it was indeed paint chipping. The we noticed the same around the rear bumper, where it mates to the black plastic guard that sits on top of it.

The rest of the paint was great however. Very little orange peel, and a nice depth and richness to it.

While pain peeling is worse, the thought of having mismatched white panels on the vehicle would drive me nuts.

Bummer, because it was otherwise a very clean truck, but we lucked out and ended up with a nicer silver one instead.

They must have borrowed some of Honda’s white paint.

It seems to be happening on 2016+ Tacomas too.

Toyota paint sucks. Even though I kept up on the waxing it failed on my Tacoma, and almost every other one I see out here is having the clear fail on it.

      OUCH.
      From this:

      to this:

Alphard owner (in 2016) noticed that the little chip turned into a giant swathe of missing paint after rain.

Our iQ is 070 and while the paint quality isn't great, it isn't peeling off....yet.

I'm surprised the Prius wasn't included on that list.

I had a huge chunk peel off of the roof and needed to respray it (Blizzard).

I saw a white Odyssey in the school parking lot this AM with a huge splotch of paint missing on the roof between the windshield and the sunroof. It was a late-model one too (current bodystyle). Yikes.

I'm amazed that Toyota still uses the Super White paint on their new cars to this day.

They must be using the same supplier as Chrysler did for the Neon in 1993.

Those were BAD, but I think GM wins the crown just for these things alone.

I wonder why my wife's 2018 4Runner is on the list. I think it's Super White. Did they add something to the process (clear coat, perhaps?) that prevents this issue?

No. Super White is single stage. There's also Super White II which is 2-stage. 4Runner / Taco / Tundra are single stage.

I think the older models just weren't prepped properly, hence their inclusion.

When I saw this post last night, my wife went checked the website and it just shows "Super White" as the color. So the newer 4Rs are still single or "II"? I'm confused.
