      This is for a 2005 Jetta, motor code is BGQ. 150,xxxish miles. I'm in the middle of changing the upper and lower chains plus whatever else I find broken. I can't turn back now! A few questions for the pros.

      1 Are new bolts for the cam sprockets required, or can they be reused?

      2 How do you know if the VVT sprocket/devise is good?

      This car will not be a hot rod so what is a good economical brand of timing set to use? I see cloyes at alot of places, any good?

      Thanks in advance, and I will answer any missing info if needed.

      One more question. Is it best to drain the trans fluid before removal with an automatic trans?

      For me, the answer to #1 is replace the bolts. Whenever I dig that deep in a job, I replace the bolts and nuts because they are inexpensive and I sure as heck don't want go back in there again.

      I think you are right about the bolts. Just seems odd to me that even the most "complete" timing sets don't include the cam bolts.

      As for the phaser, any special orientation to the cam required? I haven't seen anything saying there is a set position when installing, or any way to see if it's good or bad.

      Also drain the automatic trans fluid before removal????

      Whenever a kit doesn't come with bolts/nuts, they intend for you to purchase them from the dealer. I assume that, if they buy the bolts/nuts for a kit and don't sell a kit, they take a loss. Check out parts.vw.com or call your VW dealer's parts dept, if you need help identifying parts.

      My manual shows a hole where you're to put the crankshaft locking tool in. However, it does not show where on the engine block the hole is. Any help?

      From THIS THREAD "The crankshaft lock position is hidden behind a bolt on the rear passenger side of the engine. If you lay down below the engine you should feel it right above one of the mounting points for a lower engine support."

      Passenger side of the car, on the rear (the side that faces the firewall) . It's takes a 17 mm socket. It's kinda hidden behind a bracket that looks like an unused mount or a lift point.
