Drove a new M5 Competition today. Wouldn’t want it in a manual.

Wow Ducky. There’s a username I don’t see often. Hope you’ve been well!!

M5 was bonkers fast. I’ll need a few days to gather my thoughts before I make a thread, if I even do that.

UUGH. You have to go and be an insulting DB about it at the end. I'm a car guy, too. I like cars like this:

I've built cars from the ground up, and owned over 130 cars in the last 45 years. I've hand assembled manual transmissions AND automatic transmissions and modded automatics to shift faster, firmer and hold gears longer by modifying the valve bodies, clutch packs and TCs.

Automatics are merely a different mechanical means of transferring power, and they can be VERY effective at that. They are great for turbo engines as they allow the turbo to remain spooled up DURING the shift, which lifting off the throttle in a manual cannot do without a lot of ancillary components to keep it spun up. And shiftable automatics are great for dual purpose street/sport cars and sedans were you can have the option of telling the car what gear to be in when you want t to be there during sporty driving ad letting it decide for itself when just cruising around and in traffic. That's why I built up a modded AOD automatic for my V8 RX7. It allowed for max performance for autocrossing while keeping it easy to drive on the street.

Generally I feel automatics aren't suited for small engine cars, though the newer small turbo motors are not held back by automatics like their N/A counterparts. Large engine cars can get by with good autoboxes fairly easily, as can any max performance car. And definitely luxury cars work well with automatics. And for the kind of towing I do, I prefer an automatic in the truck/SUV. Every car I've bought new other than the Volt has been equipped with a manual by choice. But many of my most fun cars have had automatics, like the three posted above. As a CAR GUY I'm not gong to be so myopic as to miss out on owning/driving cars like them.

Only ever IN RESPONSE to that same DB attitude and insults.

When are you going to understand that? Stop being insulting and you won't get insulted IN RETURN by ME. Intelligent commentary gets thoughtful responses. Insults get insults. Simple.

I got creative with the route. They were supposed to zero out the trip odometer and they didn’t. Thankfully a really fun road is just off their planned route so I got to cane it pretty hard. I would have loved to do the loop we did, but that would have been obvious.

Two manuals, the STI will never ever go away.

Actually planning on adding a VW bus eventually, so it will be 3 Manuels.

Luckily, the route I went on had a few opportunities for some really hard launches and included a freeway onramp. Supercar fast.

PS: I drove the M2 which had the DCT - the ZF8 in the M5 was much better. I'd buy the M2 with the manual but wouldn't be sad with a M5 automatic.

Elon Musk has the better idea, get rid of the dealership sales model.

You LOL because you are a dealer manager, all the way to the bank, I'm sure.

Does that hurt your feelings? That someone can make money running a dealership that stands for everything you're against?

Show me on the doll where the dealership hurt you. Go ahead, it's okay.

You make smart remarks because there is truth in what I say. Good work to reveal your contempt for the consumer.

Fact is that most consumers only go to the dealership when buying a new car because they have NO real choice in the matter, so they put up with it. You well know that truth.

Smaller cars with a manual are the sweet spot for me. As long as I can get a Civic, Mazda 3 or Miata with a manual I’ll be happy.
