Not surprisingly someone was driving with their rear fog lights on when it's not foggy.

Center mounted rear fog light is nothing new.

But, Audi decided to mount them high up, within their light cluster, with 4 LED's just below the 4-rings.... so it looks like the CMHSL is stuck on.

(have to download some dash cam footage for a better pic).

      Where is the actual CHMSL?

My personal "looks broken/on/off but isn't" pet peeve are the widely spaced projector headlights without amber markers on the first-generation Mazda6 and Mercedes W220, where it looks like they're driving around with just the parking lights on even though the headlights are on.

But of course, the worst are burnt-out taillights (why is it always a Hyundai?), bad ground causing turn signals to come on instead of the brake light (*cough* '90s GM products *cough*)...and people simply not using their signals.

It's astounding to me that Audi/MB still insists in fitting their NA spec cars with rear fogs, it has to be the most misused automotive lighting feature out there. But when it's needed it can be useful, and honestly not as much in the fog as in the rain.

Logic saying it would be a CMMSL if it was mounted in the middle.

GM dust buster Vans had their CHMSL mounted lower than the brake lights, which still passed FMVSS requirements

Trunk lid mounted CHMSL are not that uncommon, there have been plenty of cars that have had trunklid mounted CHMSL.

It’s not.. great, I’ll grant you that.

But this is the brake light setup, that I just saw yesterday, that annoys me the most. I know why Mini did it, but it still looks like bulbs burned out, every time.

BMW was too lazy to design it like Audi.

But oddly enough, I've been seeing more Audi Q's with the bumper mounted auxiliary lights operating instead of the hatch (with the hatch closed). I suspect there is a latch sensor issue.

And that's why BMW didn't bother

(but perhaps those hatches just weren't closed properly?)

FMVSS doesn't allow brake lights to be on a moveable body panel. Thus, the Mini has the brakes at the bottom.

I'm probably going to end up in prison some day for assaulting one of those a-holes that drives around all the time with their rear fog on.

I see it so often with Q7s I'm convinced ON is the default.

They have extra brake lamps on the bumper that are activated if the hatch is open while driving.

Or a car can have an extra set of brake lamps under the trunk or hatch that are visible if the trunk or hatch is open while driving, like the Buick Cascadia.

      https://www.autotrader.com/car-news/...llights-275667

But all of this seems like extra engineering just to avoid using vertical strip brake lamps and other rear lamps like so many station wagons, vans, and SUVs used in the past.
