I booked the hotel, so I am going, even if it is in the boring wagon. But if the head is junk, I can get the Rabbit ready to go in a weekend.
      Also looking at doing this:

Midday update: Since the head is at the machine shop, I spent some time on the aesthetics. Removed the terrible tint.

Also, vacuumed out the interior, put new seat sliders in, removed falling headliner, swapped in a golf ball shifter, mk3 shifter weight and messed with the stereo. Unfortunately the Sony tape deck is dead. Trying to figure out what I should do for tunes.
Threw one of the rally wheels on for test figment as well.

Good work. I am prone to white ones...here is one of my white MK2s as inspiration.

      Nice pickup!

Kiwi shoe dye for the black trim. How’s the clutch cable and shifter stuff?

See if you can swap to a dual outlet exhaust manifold while you are in there (if it doesn’t have one already).

Clutch cable is still an auto adjust, but feels ok. Gonna leave it for now. Already has a dual outlet manifold, I think all the later 8v GTIs got em. There is no reverse lockout plate, so ordered that. And a Techtonics tuning window banner. . The exhaust sounds broken, so gonna buy a second hand one from a friend. Hopefully it won’t be loud, since it’s a magnaflow.
I am thinking about being lazy and paying for a detail. I really don’t enjoy cleaning cars, and this paint needs some serious love.

I missed this, but nice! I would have only bought a Alpine white or Montana green gti. And turbo wheels own me.

Same here...Montana Green would be my second choice. And those ROnal Phase 1s were a pain to get hold of lol. Great work on the car

Yah, It is rather minimalist. It came stock on a Polo. Here is the stock wheel, it’s a bit bulkier. Though still rather simple. I wonder if we didn’t get the Polo style wheel because of safety.

I did the heat gun trick to my last two MK2's and it worked awesome once I got the process down. Results lasted too.

I may cheat and just use back to black, as its super easy to apply, and time is running out. 11 days until I am leaving, and the head isn't on the car.

I got a "maybe" from the machine shop. Hoping to find out today if there was enough meat to get a flat surface. Worst case, tomorrow. If it isn't running by Wednesday or Thursday, I am going to have to divert my attention to the Rabbit.

      Any thoughts about a VR6?

I like 1.8Ts, massive power potential, million of them out there, easy-ish swap.

But, you've already got a 4cyl turbo and the VR6 exhaust...

The plan isn’t to keep this car. And I like the idea of a 4 cylinder gti. The Wookiee noise is amazing though. The cost of the timing chains and that stuff is also a detractor.

Soapy water and razor blades. I plastic bagged it with windex, but I didn’t have a black bag. It helped some. Tried the defroster, it didn’t work, so I wasn’t worried about saving it.

      Oohdelally! Pullin' for ya!

My current parts purgatory is not a fun place to be. Would much prefer a flat out "this is NLA" versus "we think we can find it" proceeded by several c*ck tease-esque "check back in XX days we should have it then".
