After 40+ cars and 20 or so years in Chicago, life happened and I got an amazing opportunity to move to SF for a job that I've always wanted.

Of those many cars I've owned, bought/sold/flipped etc. - only one stands out above the rest, and that's my 09 997.2 C2S. In the coming days my 996 is finding a new home while I also scramble to try and sell my e30.

I'm leaving on Monday and made the decision that if I'm going to be in the bay, it should be with a car that can show me the new area in the most visceral, fun and exciting way. It'll be expensive and likely annoying keeping it in SF, but it's definitely feeling like a yolo decision.

Over the last couple weeks I've been getting it sorted as much as possible, knowing that garage/tool/friend access is going to be limited out there. So I figured I'd post photos here as I make the 2700+ mi trek across the country and document the journey. Definitely looking forward to meeting TCLers out there and showing me around - it helps that I'm gonna be working with a ton of car people too.

Needless to say - I'm excited. The drive:

Got new painted hardback adaptive sport seats installed and red seat belts to match. Has nothing to do with the trip - but they sure are comfortable and look awesome:

Who wore it better? Bike attachment to be fitted tomorrow:

Having moved west from my hometown of Chicago almost exactly one decade ago this month, I wish you the best of luck!

I see you are staying south of Las Vegas, but if you do end up passing through on your trip, let me know, and we can grab lunch or a drink.

Life changes are difficult, but worth it. There are exactly two outcomes here:

      1) You new new job is a great success. You thrive. SF becomes your hometown. All is well.

      2) You fall flat on your face. You move home, and go back to your old life, except that this time with a great life experience under your belt.

      You can't go wrong.

But either way, give it hell! Good luck!

I've actually done LA/PCH1 and a few other things several times - but I'm excited to do it in my *own* car.

I've got a day in SD & PHX, two in LA, and sunday the 7th reserved for a stroll up the coast.

And to the point above ^ - you're entirely right. I can always come back here where I know every corner inside and out, but open to a new POV and the challenges that lay ahead

Think about taking 80 to 76 to 70 and then 70 through Colorado and Utah... then go down to vegas and over to LA...

Most likely MUCH more scenic than driving through the dust bowl.

Was a bit concerned about potential snow and summer tires. But going to think about it.

Oh do I have a laundry list of roads for you to enjoy once you get out here.

How are you getting through AZ? If you are cutting diagonally across the state, make sure to hit 89A, 89S of Prescott, 96 and 97.

Oh, I meant you have to do this with Vad. Law Bear has to determine if you’re eligible to stay. Insider tip - It all depends on how you react to pastrami.

When you enter AZ, continue on the 40 till you hit Flagstaff and take the 89A through Sedona and Jerome. After Jerome continue on the 89A, as there is some turns and continue through Prescott, there are some more turns after Yarnell. You will end on the 93 just outside Wikenburg, which is about an hour West of Phoenix.

When I showed up and there was an e30 M3, e30 325is and two M4s parked outside I knew I was in good company. Stoked.

Congrats. I had never paid attention to your 996, assuming you had posted about it, but my goodness it's clean! If only I was in the market, I'd pick it up and drive it back to CA. For the price, that's a great car.

Should you make a stop in OKC, head to Bricktown Brewing for a blueberry beer. If there's a cute little redhead behind the bar, tell her the Phanatic said hi.
      I'm watching you, Erik.

      Looking forward to seeing pics!

I've done LA to Illinois 4 times but it was always during the summer so I wasn't concerned with the snow on I-70 going through Colorado. But if the forecast is looking good, it's a great route.

      Good luck.

Also the internet has ruined me as I was totally expecting this when I read the title.

      Update: 4/2

Did 992 miles yesterday - really too bad it wasn't 997 eh? Decided at last second to go through Denver instead and get a day of snowboarding in. Did I pack my gear you may ask? Of course I did, because #priorities.

Mostly uneventful across middle America, but the front 7mm spacers were driving me nuts with a slight steering wheel vibration for the first 400ish miles. I knew about it back in Chicago but hoped I could find a good speed where it goes away - alas, no.

What else? Mileage started pretty poor in the low 18s (can squeeze out 24-25 around 70mph), but I think the roof box, bike and wind were really pushing against me. As soon as I got to driving through Denver and the mountains however, I'm back at 19.5 overall - which for a 385hp sport car with a giant anti-aerodynamic aid driving up mountains is p. decent actually.

I knew the weather was going to be fine in Denver, but a bit of precipitation started coming down as I got into the mountains and with summer tires that had me worried. Luckily it went away and in the high 30s and dry roads it's manageable. Did get a few looks in the right lane with my hazards on of course...

Tomorrow I drive towards Phoenix - a slightly shorter stint than the trek across the plains, hoping there are a few things to see. Plan on stopping by the grand canyon for a sec and then surprising some relatives in AZ. Then off to LA, followed by SF. Stay tuned!

      It begins:

      So much nothingness

      The opposite of hubcentric

      Second tape job

      much better

      uh oh

      Vail!

Are you staying the night in Springfield, MO or passing through? Either way, I'd be happy to meet up and buy you a beer.

EDIT - Nevermind, I should have read more of this. I was busy, skimmed through and didn't see the detour. Good luck with your travels, that's a great car to take a road trip in.

      Awesome! Thank you for sharing!

I recently took that exact route from Scottsdale to Chicago for Christmas. Not much to see going through Texas and Oklahoma but hope you got to see the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX. While in AZ try to see Sedona and if you're going through Palm Springs you'll be close to Joshua Tree which I drove through recently as well.

Congrats on the new Job, I spend about 2 weeks out of the month in the Bay Area calling on my dealers there.
