Hyundai has uncovered its new generation 2020 Sonata a little over a month before it celebrates its formal world premiere at the 2019 New York Auto Show on April 19.

Bolder looks and a four-door coupe body

Penned from a clean sheet, the eighth generation of Hyundai’s mid-size sedan marks a return to a more sporty, four-door coupe body style akin to the sixth generation model from 2009.

It’s the first production model to embody the Korean brand’s new design mantra dubbed Sensuous Sportiness design that was previewed by last year’s Le Fil Rouge concept (HDC-1) and which to some extent, hinted at the new Sonata.

“Sonata celebrates innovative coupe-like silhouette,” said Sang Yup Lee, senior vice president and head of the Hyundai Design Center. “A short overhang, sloping roofline and low deck lid create a balanced feel, and Hyundai’s signature chrome accent now goes all the way into the hood, making it look even longer. It also has LED lighting built in. These cues bring the Sensuous Sportiness design to life.”

      Trick lights, sort of

In another first for a production Hyundai, the 2020 Sonata borrows of the Hidden Lighting Lamps from the HDC-2 concept car from last year’s Busan Motor Show. As the Korean company puts it, “the Hidden Lighting Lamps appear to be of a chromic material when switched off and become dramatically lit when turned on” to serve as Daytime Running Lights (DLRs).

      It’s bigger too

Hyundai tells us that the new mid-size sedan comes with a 30mm (1.2 in.) lower height and a width extended by 25mm (1 in.). Its wheelbase is extended by 35mm (1.4 in), and its whole length by 45mm (1.8 in.).

Hyundai’s efforts to give the Sonata a more premium feel and attractive design aren’t limited to the exterior, as the cabin has been overhauled accordingly. Bypassing the designers’ claims of elements being inspired by a Stealth aircraft, it does look like a better place to sit in than before, with the compressed the height of the dashboard and HVAC vents giving it a cleaner and lighter look.

The centre-gauge cluster display is fully digital, while the infotainment screen gets capacitive touch buttons. There’s also a newly designed automatic transmission control with buttons instead of a traditional shifter. Yesterday, Hyundai confirmed that the Sonata will get a smartphone-based digital key. Owners will be able to download a smartphone app and then use it to unlock and start the vehicle.

Sales of the new Sonata will start worldwide in the second half of the year.

First glance gave me some Arteon vibes but it might be the puke-tastic color.

Edit: The tiny teardrop bumps on the tail lights bug me.

Double edit: Wow, the interior is nice.

I'm sure someone spent many man-hours and many, many bottles of Soju working on it. First on a CFD program then inside a wind tunnel.

That.... looks really good? Different but cohesive, somewhat.

I like the chrome strip from headlight to A-pillar and onwards. Nice touch.

The wheels on the particular model from OP's post look to be very easy to clean, so at least there's that.

I recall that the cab drivers in Korea weren't a fan of the 2009 Sonata b/c the styling was too radical. And overall in general b/c Korean tastes tends to lean on the conservative side. So that's why Hyundai toned it down a bit for the following generation.

So I'm guessing that taxi drivers won't be too thrilled with the new one? Or has Korean tastes evolved since then? I think Hyundai should work on a dedicated taxi based on one of their CUV platform. Something upright styling, sliding doors with a hatch back cargo opening.

I wouldn't say it looks particularly coupe like but it looks decent. That gold color is an odd one to show it off. A few odd cut lines and trim here and there.

Nice looking for a mainstream sedan, although I wonder since the sedan is dying now, if it's too late to the party? Perhaps there's more room though given GM & Ford are slowly killing off their sedans.

Price it right and buyers will come.

Not to mention, if it's a global car US sales are just part of the equation.

      Ford is full of sh!t.
There's always going to be a market for sedans and things other than CUVs and F150s.
Ford's strategy for anything not the F150 has been a boom-bust cycle of investment and promotional activity, followed by years of withering on the vine.
This is a company that has introduced and killed the Taurus TWICE! They let that once segment leading vehicle lose relevancy.
They introduced the Fusion, to replace the Taurus. Invested millions in tooling and marketing, and again....POOF!....gone.
Ditto for every mainstream Ford sedan that has EVER existed.
Meanwhile, Hyundai keeps nurturing and investing in the midsized sedan segment (amongst many other sedans), as does Toyota, Honda, Nissan.

I'll need to see it in person. Rarely do I think full length tail lights look good. And that side surfacing is needlessly complex. But it could end up looking better in person. Overall I like it, and I have enjoyed watching H/K refine their designs and mature over the years. They have some really neat cars now.

It looks pretty nice, good for them. That said, I think Hyundai probably can get away with consolidating production in Korea to free up space in Alabama for more SUVs. But H/K have been among the slowest to recognize and acknowledge the transition away from cars, so who knows.

I don't hate it, but I don't love it. Something from the design is missing and I can't put my finger on it.

      Really???!!!
It seems like Hyundai and Kia have a ridiculous number of CUVs. Easily more than most of the other Asian manufacturers, other than Toyota.
