I'm looking at picking up an 86 Scirocco this weekend. The owner sent a video of the engine running, but has a strange griding/honking sound coming from it. Can you tell me what it is?
The alternator appears recently rebuilt...so, one ASS-umes good bearings
Therefore, I would question if the cam belt tensioner bearing is getting dry and worn. THAT is not an expensive item. Easy to replace.
Other than that, the cam belt may be making slight contact with the inner cover on the edge of the belt. Or, a combo of this the item in the last sentence.
I don't think you have a lot to worry about unless you are very inept and lazy.
Wanted to add edit to above:
Where has this "genius" seller stashed the cam belt cover? This lack of belt cover contributes to dry cam belt tensioner wheel SUBSTANTIALLY.
To locate bearing going bad. Take a long wooden stick, like yard stick and put on top of alternator near bearing and center bolts on other pulleys that don't rotate. You will hear the one that made the loader noise by put your ear to the end of stick on each one.
