SoI am falling down the rabbit hole again..... Here I go. (copied from OT)

With the Heep failing emissions, I am not sure I want to keep putting money into it. It has been a perfect side car for us over the last year. It was cheap, it runs well, it just is starting to really show its age and at this point it is 17 years old. In thinking of what I would want to replace it with, I want ot stay in the "Rugged" SUV area but would like a lot more of the niceties I am used to. I keep coming back to late model Lexus SUVs. Either a 2010ish LX570 or 2012ish GX460. the GX is wildly inexpensive for what you get. a 2012 with 85k with every and all lux bits I would want seems to hover right around 20K. The LX is about 10K more for a car that is a few years older with 40% more miles, but seemingly will hold its value more.

What does TCL think of my stupidity? Any other suggestions other than a 4runner? I would still like to be able to take it down to a Cabin Fest or go camping so something that is capable is important, but like I said, I would like to have more of the niceties.

GX is a great bargain for that kind of vehicle.

Its not. I have thought about a Q5 but its just too soft for me.

The GX's appear to be the hidden gems on the market right now for used Toyota trucks.

I just had a thread about this a weeks or two ago, but you may also want to consider the newer 2.7T F-150s, and some other american pick-up offerings. you'd be surprised how many options come on the higher trim levels.

Also, worth kicking around one of the top trim Wranglers (though not very luxurious) offer a lot of bang for the buck. The GMT Tahoe/Yukon/Suburbans are also pretty nice, but there was discussion about the AFM systems being problematic.

I drove a GX (well, Prado with the 3-liter, naturally-aspirated diesel and a stick) all over Belize (on-road, off-road, unpaved mountain roads, through rivers) -- it is, by far, one of the most capable, comfortable, all-around competent vehicles I have ever driven. I would probably own one (GX) if we could get it with something a little more efficient than the (admittedly rather excellent) gas V8s. It just ate up washboard roads at 50+ MPH -- looking out the window the wheels would be flailing wildly around but we were super comfortable inside.

Is an Infiniti QX56/QX80 too big? It has the hydraulic suspension control from the Patrol but no locking diffs unfortunately. Neither does the Lexus GX460 I think.

I like the GX, but I could not handle the issues they have with the dash cracking. And if I recall, you're coming from a ZJ, right? So the ride will be fine for you.

Dude, just go with a Wrangler.

I took a short wheelbase ragtop cross country, you can take a long wheelbase hardtop to Erikfest.

Thought about these. Too big(and ugly). I get the LX is about the same size, but I guess the Nissan is just too damn ugly

We love our GX460. It is a 2012 Premium that has pretty much all the goodies and gadgets. The 2010-2013 look better than the newer ones that have a face lift.

How long have you had it? Any problems with it? Have you taken it off road at all? Overall what are your impressions?

Newer Grand Cherokee. Get a high level trim for bells and whistles.

Perhaps my Jeep would interest you. Japanese reliability plus rugged Jeep capability all rolled into one great vehicle. And with two intermittent wipers AND a heater, "luxury" doesn't come close to describing it.

We love my wife's RX350. Got it new 8 years ago. The torsen AWD is predictably badass in deep snow.
She let it get cheap brakes once and they squealed until she got OEM ones. That's the only "problem" we've had in 90,000 miles.
