We are building a new media room as part of our home renovation, and are installing the following:

And, for the time being, an older 12" sub that will eventually be replaced likely by 2 subs depending on space availability.

We are doing L/C/R flanking the LG on the front wall, 2 rear speakers, and 4 6.5" Atmos speakers in ceiling installed per Dolby's recommendations.

Anyone running a similar setup? Curious to know if there are any tips/tricks to setting it up (beyond the receiver's built-in calibration program, that is).

Nothing really to add other then check Accessories4Less for refurbished receivers. They are typically 40-50% less then MSRP and they are factory re-certified.

I'm also going to be putting in those Monoprice in-wall/ceiling ribbon speakers in the living room of our new house in a 5.1 setup so I'd love to hear your impressions of them.

That's where ours came from. It's replacing a Marantz 5.1 (which died an early death) and an older Onyko, both of which also came from A4L.

I'm very curious about the Monoprice Amber speakers. I like the sound quality of the folded diaphragm tweeter, and the quality of the speakers overall seems very good for the price--woven CF cones, rubber surrounds, decent looking crossover networks, pretty nice finish quality. I got them for 20% off retail on one of their never-ending 1 day sales, too.

I think it's going to be a race to see which of us hears them installed first...

Putting in the 5.1 is pretty low on our prority list of stuff we have to buy for the house. I'm also waiting for Marantz and Denon to release their Airplay2 compatible receivers.

Most likely you will get them first.

The Onkyo is allegedly AP2 compatible, just needing a firmware update.

It’s sitting in a box waiting for install...

Onkyo is weird because they don't go into any detail on their website. I know they had some "Airplay" compatible models which appear to be Airplay 1 but they don't have anything listed on Apple's Airplay2 device list.

Yes, it’s a wait and see thing for us. Very much a nice to have as we would likely get a HomePod (or Sonos One) for another area of the house.

We ended up going Sonos One. We bought 4 on Prime Day and they work really well with AirPlay 2, even with our older Play:1 paired to one of them. I can't get them working with Siri though. I have them all setup in Homekit but it just won't play for some reason. Definitely not a deal-breaker but it would be nice to just have to say, "Hey Siri. Play Dave Mathews in the kitchen."

Totally. We are Apple Music subscribers, so there is a lot of value in leveraging AirPlay 2.

Because so much of our Apple-purchased music has DRM the Sonos software won't even play it. Same thing with Denon's Heos system and all the other similar system. It's why AirPlay2 is a must for us.

Ah, good point. We have no purchased music, just streaming-but something to consider...

Subwoofers are what will set your media room up for success.

Are you doing ALL in wall? If the OLED is on the wall, I'd recommend a matching trio of towers for your LCR.

Yep, all in wall save for the sub(s). No space in the narrow room for floor/wall-mounted speakers.

We don’t expect to play this at reference volumes much (if at all-my ear damage pretty much prevents that) but we definitely want clarity and some level of realism.

We’ll hopefully have a sense of it in about a month if all goes to plan...stay tuned.

Update: This is what we ended up with. 9 Monoprice Amber speakers, and a Paradigm 12 sub (for now).

Thus far, I’m pretty happy. The sub doesn’t have the extension or clarity that I want long term—will probably go to an SVS at some point—but in a small room (16’x10’) it does what we need most of the time.

The Atmos effects are pretty noticeable on movies like Fantastic Beasts and Incredibles 2.

I wonder if we won’t ponder moving up to a 75” OLED when prices drop more, but I’m thrilled with the picture quality so far.

Nice. I’ve been looking at TVs lately and we’re going to need a 75” for our family room. Once that gets purchased it’ll get wall mounted. Then the 5.1 will come after that at some point.

I strongly urge you to find the best deal you can on an LG OLED.

Pricey, yes. But I've never seen picture quality as good as I have with this. And it replaced a Panny plasma, which was still beautiful (and had no dead sections/burn-in) at 10 years' service.
