I'm interested in building an AR. My buddy built a AR off the Palmetto Arms 80% lower. I'm getting my tax return and am considering building an AR myself. I know there are many of you that have lots of experience. What do you guys suggest? I've done a lot of reading around and varying opinions all over the place. I'll probably get the same here, but I figured I'd ask. Any good sources you can point me to are greatly appreciated.

I have, I scrolled through and clicked some that looked promising but found nothing that I was looking for. Don't know why...

      Thanks though! I'll start here.

What's your experience level with the AR platform? What are your plans for the weapon?

You should just get a stripped Anderson lower, Magpul CTR stock and a cheap lower parts kit... and a complete 16" Magpul upper. I doubt you'll need anything better. The only upgrade you'd maybe need down the road is a slightly upgraded trigger like one of the mil-spec ones from ALG or BCM... and maybe a cheap Primary Arms red dot. I honestly don't think that anything else will be needed.

This is a great guide for the lower: https://www.itstactical.com/series/diy-ar-15-build/

Here is my thread which goes from thinking about an AK to buying an AR. I didn't even include it in the list above.

Just make sure you get a good barrel and bolt carrier setup. Maybe something with a .223 wylde chamber as it will still shoot .223 and 5.56 but is supposed to improve accuracy.

Figure out what you want to do with it first. There's a plethora of articles/pages/posts about every type of activity with an AR. Always ask questions before you buy things, the platform is easy to customize but it can get out of hand very easily.
      A loving welcome from TCL

Here is another resource - AR15 forum. Complete with "Build it yourself" section.
      https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/

Also, YouTube is your friend if your more visual.
I've watched several good videos on how to do AR15 builds, mods, etc.

You'll have to post a photo of your AR when it's completed.

      Good Luck!

All that. If you want a DIY project to tell people about and a problem when you want to sell it, get an 80% lower. If you want a rifle, buy a lower.

This will be a DIY for me and I don't plan on selling. Don't really care to brag about my projects to others much, but thanks for the input.

I have not watched many youtube videos, or read many articles about building an AR, but what I have seen is that Midway USA has some really good info.

A tip from me is that when lining up parts and springs, use a smaller than hole sized punch as a "slave pin" to hold things in place as you drive in a pin.

If you do get to working on one and have questions, post them. If I see it I'll try to advise.

Just got into building ARs myself. I decided to go the 80% route and bought a 5D tactical jig. Never milled or used a router before. Plenty of sites out there that go step by step on how to piece together an AR, including parts lists and tools. I read several of these articles, then from there I was able to get an idea of what parts I would want to upgrade. I put together my shopping list and googled them to find the best prices.

Here's the first hole drilled out.

The top two holes on the lower done. Base plate mounted to my Ridgid router. Guide pins not mounted in this pic.

      Start of the first pass.

First pass complete. Pretty disappointed how quickly the anodizing on the jig started to wear off.

Milling complete, pretty happy with the result.

Safety, trigger and hammer pin holes drilled. Used hand drill and the left side safety hole isn't perfectly round. I'll probably get a drill press next time I do this.

So... how'd the rest of that 80% lower go? Everything install correctly? How's the functionality?
