So, I realize this forum is pretty dead and the likelihood of anyone answering is slim, but you never know, it is almost Christmas..... Does anyone know much about electric guitars? My 9 year old just told me he wants one so he can learn to play, but since I know nothing about them am not really certain what to look for in a beginner guitar.

For example is this any good for a beginner:

Reviews on Amazon seem decent, but there are only 5. So, not really a great amount to go by.

I would rather get him something at least semi decent than one they have at toysrus for example. Especially as he is the kind of person who may very well stick with it, he has had an interest in playing/creating music for a few years now.

      Thanks

      What's your price point?

      Maybe a Squire (Fender) Strat

Thanks, we actually ended up buying him one of the guitars listed at that beginner's link, an Epiphone Les Paul Special II. Ended up getting the "player pack" from Costco for $160, I am sure the included amplifier is not great and the bag may not be either. But, for a beginner, it was a good deal and if he ends up outgrowing it we are not out a ton of money.

^ That's a great start. We got our daughter a Fender 3/4 size folk guitar a few years ago and she's moved on to my Strat and Sheraton quite well.
