So i decided to start my own thread.

I've been on this website for a very long time, owned and still own VWs.

      Here they are:

      1. 2014 VW Tiguan S 6MT FWD

      2. 2008 VW Polo 9N3 1.4TDI 5MT

      3. 2002 VW Jetta Wagon 1.8T AUTO

Been more than happy with all of them.

Lately i've been quite shocked by the quality and general direction of where the new cars are heading. They are just not solid and to me seem like a freaking tablet. When you get into a new car and see all of those monitors, buttons, screens you start to wonder. I mean cars are changing and they are less fun. They are more like a smartphone. And of course i always remember childhood, memories of parents cars and cars that used to be around.

So i decided to start collecting diecast model cars of my childhood, Soviet cars made in USSR or Russia. A lot of vintage stuff. Oh boy do they cost now. But i was patient and started to spend hours on eBay and various other sites hunting for them for a good price.

I think i've accomplished a lot within last 6 months. I have a collection in L.A. and i have 1 in Moscow. I've spent about $500 on all models and i can sell them for about $3000 now. Thats how lucky i got. But i am keeping them as some of them are obsolete.

      Here it is:

Last one is GAZ M20 Pobeda 1:8 scale. Google if interested. Lights come on, everything opens, almost 100 % accurate. If interest, i will post more.

      Rest are 1:43.

Yes, i love trucks. Anyone plays Spintires on here or ETS2?

While spending a lot of time on drive2.ru i met a lot some USSR car fanatics in L.A. And it went downhill from there (the budget and desire to own some history)

And there are way more coming shortly. There are a lot of Soviet cars in States now. Ladas, Moskvitch, Nivas, Kamaz, GAZ, UAZ, etc.

Here are a few videos of those cars at Cars & Coffee (sorry but videos are in Russian)

Here are i am, in Russia for a month and of course i started a hunt. I was willing to drive 1000s of km to pick up a nice example because they are getting pricey and Moscow does not have much of them at all. However, given that it is cold, heaters don't work most of the time in those cars and possibility of being stranded on the HWY in this cold is not promising. So i looked harder and found 1 car that i wanted. I will buy more but for now this is what i am obtaining (in the process).

Moskvitch IZH 2125 KOMBI 1987. Built right next to ak47s. 100000 kms and rusted front fenders. All original and floor is solid.

Also might pick up a soviet car trailer while at it. My friends are convincing me to bring this to the states but we will see.

Also wanting a 2103 and a Niva. And Volga probably as well as UAZ.

So here is whats been happening.

As far as US, i am very surprised by the new Golf Alltrack and might pick one up.

Let me know if something interests you and i will make some videos of Moskvitch.

Great pics, grew up on the ZAZ 966 and VAZ 2105. I've seen a few Ural bikes in the US, but the cars have eluded me.

I also love that some of these (namely Niva), can be bought brand new in the UK.

      Thank you!

Yes, NIVA can still be bought. Now with A/C parktronic and navi (i think). 3dr and 5dr. Now they have URBAN edition even (lower, bumpers and minus some offload goodies).

UAZ still can be bought in more or less original form.

Wow that's really cool! Impressive collection. I love old Russian cars, but have never seen any in person. Very few over here on the east coast. I remember hearing recently about chevy building a modern SUV styled like a Lada Niva? I'll have to see if I can find a pic. And I've always wanted one of those UAZ's or GAZ's instead of a jeep!

      Ah, found it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Niva

The Chevrolet Niva is a mini sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by GM-AvtoVAZ, a joint venture between AvtoVAZ (the parent company of the Lada brand) and General Motors, since 1998. The car is a development of the Lada Niva and was previously known as the VAZ-2123 in the design stage.

When you're back in LA and bring the Moskvitch over (which I damn hope you do), please let me know as I'd love to see one locally.

I'm assuming the photo of the trucks was taken in Woodland Hills across the street from Honda? If so, I'm upset because you can't imagine how close I am to that area and that I missed the opportunity to see them....

Living in the USSR for a number of years, I distinctively remember the taxi rides riding in the back of a Volga or a Zhiguli... good times

Come when there is a big show. I think every first Sunday of the Month. ZILs will be there and UAZ. And soon more stuff will come.

These "improved" vehicles always seem to sell poorly, at least prior to the ruble losing half its value. People either want new domestic cars at really cheap prices like the classic Niva, or slightly used European/American ones which run at similiar prices to these upmarket Russian models.

VAZ is trying to catch up to foreign brands in quite a few segments. They even came up with the Kalina NFR(need for race) hot hatch to compete with the likes of the GTI, coming with 132hp that helps it rocket to 62mph in 9.2s. That thing costs 820k rubles, which coincidentally will also get you a slightly used MK6 with superior performance and reliability. Why anyone would buy this thing over the MK6 is anyone's guess (a new MK7 1.4 starts at 1.2M rubles).

      True that.

But to be honest those 2105s and 2107s (from 93 and on) are poor in quality compare to USSR made ones. Metal quality is horrible. I am personally after USSR ones. We took a 280 km journey with my wife to Tula region and someone she knows offered me to buy a Moskvich 412. We have to come back in the Spring in order to be able to open an iced up garage and see. It has "NEW" body installed in early 90s! And all original parts. Low mileage.

Today stopped by UAZ dealer and snapped photos of off road tuned UAZ Patriot and UAZ "Buhanka".

Really liking the van and considering one.

Very cool collection, I like the little Aeroflot wagon. I became a fan of the UAZ vans when we were in Vladivostok, those rugged buggers were everywhere.

Funny how I can read bits and pieces of a language I never really studied. I see the front license of the one, and think, "Patriot". Weird.

I like that Polo, too, very cool little car. How do you like the 1.4 in it?

      Thank you.

1.4 TDI is awesome. Very peppy up until 120 km/h. And low on gas. But i like the torque. Essentially it is a 1.9tdi minus 1 cylinder. We love it!

      Collection is growing.

Picked up 2 super rare in this condition USSR huge metal trucks "ZIL". They go above $1000 for such condition but i was able to pay a little fraction of going prices.

2 more are coming. I will take a photo of all together.

I am almost done with rare USSR stuff as far s models.

JUST A cover. Seen only on Military vehicles. My educated guess is that it is used when transport is in the area where there are a lot of obstacles that can damage lights. So daytime they are ON. But also there is a small cut out so that lights could be in use when they are needed yet there is a risk of damaging lights like in rocky area.

They also make them for URAL motorcycles sold in US.
