Slightly different fueling system and Gen 2 had valvelift.

Gen2 engines were only available in audi models I believe. A4, A3, and TT

Thanks for the info.....so a side question...why does it seem that the Gen-2 (Audi valve-lift version) suffers so many more instances of oil consumption? I think the pistons and or piston rings are different, as that is what Audi claimed was the root cause of the excessive oil consumption issue.

I don't believe its a design flaw in the sense that gen 2 is inferior. I almost think its a manufacturing/assembly issue.

But both types of these engines are built in the same engine factory in Hungary...on the same production line. Did they only have the Audi Valvelift version built on the night-shift

They used completely different pistons and piston rings. I think they were going for a low friction compression primary ring which had sealing issues. Many pistons were actually replaced by Gen 1 pistons (from the transverse GTI) when warrantied.

8P A3 doesn't have valve lift. It is the same engine as GTI, CC, Tiguan, Jetta.
