I am going to go off tangent and suggest that you find a personal trainer you are comfortable working with first.

A good one would then take you to a gym that he/she knows well.

I joined about a year ago. It's a decent cardio gym, but it does not offer full free weights, just smith machines and dumbbells. I kept the membership up just for treadmill access, but I bit the bullet and bought a treadmill this year, so I am cancelling at the end of the month when my contract expires. It's so cheap, I actually worked out that I could make the membership pay for itself just by showering there instead of at home (I have an electric water heater).

I heard that if you drop weights or grunt you can get kicked out from that place. Just join your local YMCA they have pool or sauna in most areas

I could rant all day...PF is the butt of many jokes in the serious weight lifting world (it's reciprocal, WE are the butt of their jokes as well)

You get what you pay for...which isn't very much. But, if it get's your foot in the door, by all means get started there.

I joined last year at this time, dropped 34lbs via light to moderate strength training and equal amount of cardio, in addition to cutting out most processed foods and bad sugars. PF is great for the folks that are looking to shed pounds and increase strength to a certain degree. Beyond that, it's not designed for the serious lifter or person looking to bulk up. My frustration level has grown in the past two months (as expected) with the New Years resolutions crowd. I've resigned to doing my best but not getting a complete work out in. It is what it is, cheap and effective depending on your goals. I just wish the young people who travel in herds and housewives did not clog up the equipment.
