With used electronics flooded on Craiglist or laying around the house, you can get a pretty simple backup camera for dirt cheap.

First you'll need a OTG converter cable... or just make one at home...

Install a program on your Android O/S phone or junked Craigslist one and you'll have a decent setup.

      Even two cameras!

      * USB cables should not be longer then 10 feet or they'll need USB amplifiers.

Im looking to try this soon...

You can put two webcams in your side mirrors and see your blind spots inside the car also!

You can use a CD as a rear view mirror.

And get a free bagel holder.

I love projects, but you can get something like this for less than $40 USD

or a mirror mounted screen for < $50

I should note that I was talking about inferior Canadian dollars for the cost which is valued less then USD.

I read that regular LCD monitors are hard to see when its sunny but most importantly a cellphone is like a mini computer which could have features like built in gps, recording video, playing music videos and sending the audio stream to the cars stereo through a wireless FM transmitter.

You can get USB extension cables that are 30' (pardon me, 10m) long with active repeaters built in. Not sure how well they handle video.

I'm reviving this kind of old thread because I'm intrigued by this. My first question is wouldn't it have to be a waterproof webcam?
I did find this one on ebay & it claims it's waterproof & has night vision but I can't find any reviews anywhere.

I'm surprised there isn't a dedicated product that's just a back up camera with a USB that can be plugged into an Android device. Something that kind of looks like the image below but is just USB powered & doesn't need to be spliced in the reverse lights. I would think there would be a lot of interest in something like that.
