What is it with people calling, emailing, or texting about a car I'm selling on CL, setting up a meeting time, going on about how interested they are in the car, and promising they'll be there at that time, and then just not responding ever again and not showing up?

Seriously, every single "interested" party i've had contact me about my car has just completely stopped responding and is a complete flake when it comes to visiting to check it out.
Is this just a California thing? I've never experienced this back home in New England.
How does a rotary work? This one's easy: the magic triangle spins in the peanut and then apex seals come out.

If I'm setting up a meeting to look at a car, I tell them to call/text me when they leave their place. If they don't call/text me, I assume they aren't coming.

I think it's just a human thing. When I'm selling something on craigslist I don't ever plan on them actually showing up until they tell me they're on the way. Don't go out of your way to reschedule your life for them, you'll just be disappointed.

Craigslist is amazing. This happened for an E39 wagon I had listed for $3500 firm:

Seems to be that the smaller the town, the more likely people are to show up. I've had a few dozen CL transactions and only had one person flake on me.

Sounds like typical Craigslist bs to me... I've had the same experience but have no other location to compare it to.

Surprisingly, a bicycle I listed sold to the first buyer for the full asking price- that was a first for me.

Except more than half the time the salespeople are the ones trying to do the scamming...

Miami people are the flakiest people ever. Even when they text me oddball, goofball prices I say "Yes, come get it." And they NEVER show up. NEVER. I don't understand it.

Non car related; I had something on CL for $400. I get an email "give u $50." I replied "Too much. how about $40?" They respond "That is amazing". I replied "When do you want to come?" Never heard back. Lol. What a bunch of ultra maroons.

Happens out here in the boonies as well. You need a lot of time and patience to sell anything.

Craigslist buyers aren't that bad from my selling experiences............The worse are the groups on Facebook. It's like..........Let's say, I have a 2002 BMW in excellent condition for sale on a Facebook page, I only want $4000 for the car even though the blue book value says it's worth $5000, and some broke ass douche bag talks to me, asking a million questions about the car....is it smogged.....is it registered.....has it ever been in a wreck....hows the paint.......hows the paper work........does it have any electrical problems etc....on and on and on.....

These are legitimate questions, and I don't mind answering them, But come on man! It's a 2002 BMW in excellent condition and all the douche bag has to offer is $1,500

Like, come on you ****in tweeker.....put the pipe down.

I went out to some walmart to meet some guy to sell him a motorcycle tire. He was supposed to be there 15 minutes ago and I was leaving when he texted me and said he'd be there in about 15 minutes ..... I wasn't going to wait, but like an idiot I did and he finally showed up and bought the tire. Some people just don't have a clue on how to be prompt or considerate.

I've only given away free things on CL, and even the free stuff brings out the total oddballs.

      I sell alot of cars..................

If the buyer can't make it over to my house, I'll ask the buyer where he wants to meet, then when he mentions a time and location I will act a little surprised and say something like:

Yeah, I know where that place is, infact, it works out perfectly, I'm supposed to meet another guy for the car a few blocks from there......I'm gonna call other guy back and have him meet us where you said to meet.......See both you guys there in an hour".

^^^That's pretty much the exact words I say when some one wants to meet some place. Then, when I show up and the buyer asks where the other guy is, I will say, "Oh,the other guy called and said he can't see the car till this evening, but he say's he'll take it if I still have it".

Honestly, I've been guilty of doing this. I start looking at a car, get excited, then a day or two later realize what a horrible mistake it would be. Though usually I will tell the seller that I'm backing out and not just disappear.

Same thing with making a tentative offer before seeing the car. I actually prefer doing it that way. If you are asking $4000 and I feel the car is worth $3500 as described, well I'm going to tell you that the most I'm willing to pay is $3500. It saves both of us time. What's the point in waiting to make an offer, just to go spend an hour looking at it to find out you are firm on your price?

Craigslist is the modern day version of tire kicking/window shopping. There is zero penalty for me inquiring about your item for sale, which is great because the last thing Im going to do is buy your sh*t. I can talk you up all day long, get all the details, additional info/pics, tickle my fancy all while I sit at home and sip whiskey in my underwear at 10am. Sorry but you should have known I wasn't going to buy your well maintained $5000 b-e-a-u-t, even if you accepted my offer of $2000.

It's been a while since I've sold anything on CL but I recall when I sold my electronic drums I had no less than 10 flakes who called me, emailed me, made arrangements to come by and see it etc... all flaked. I finally did sell them but man, what a pain! I didn't like the idea of giving my address to these people only to have them flake.

I try now to only sell stuff that I can take to some parking lot and not my home.

I had to sell a ton of stuff from my former office that downsized and moved and that was a bitch but at least I was there at the office all day. People would who up without money, lowball me, etc... I guess they realize we will never meet again and they can act how ever they please.

Not car related: Had a guy blow up on me because I wouldn't come down off the price of my iPad Mini. I was in absolutely no rush to sell -- I already had an Air 2 and didn't need the cash, so I wasn't going to move on my price. He was texting me from different numbers after I would block him, it was crazy.

The guy (and the experience in general) pissed me off so much, I ended up selling it to my brother for $50.

      Car related:

Car broke down on the way to San Antonio this past weekend and I went to buy a new car. Before I went to the dealership I put the Civic up on craigslist for $1500obo (I was looking for $1k), I got a couple bites and every single one flaked. I sold it to the dealership for $700, I wasn't about to pay for that car to be valet parked overnight at the hotel we were at.

It takes dealing with about a 10:1 ratio of flakes/lowballers to actual, serious potential buyers on CL to actually get any **** sold.

I can't tell you how many people I had offer me $2000-3000 for my Miata when I had it advertised for $4750. What'd I get for it? $4750.
