I tried to update my Avatar and the choices are limited and the custom avatar option is not available.

Yes, custom avatars are turned off. We do that to keep the forums clean and easy to read - otherwise they tend to get filled up with blinking gifs and such.

I think getting rid of this bit of text will help with some of the confusion:

I'm sure you guys have bigger fish to fry, but seeing that "Note:" had me hunting around for a while before I found this post.

      A simple
      HTML Code:
      <p style="display: none">Note: if you have a custom avatar....<p>
should fix it without affecting anything else on the site.

That was an option for a very brief amount of time, and no longer available for selection. Custom avatars are still disabled.

Sorry to bump such an old thread but it looks like quite a few people have uploaded custom avatars within the last couple weeks. I just went and only saw the pre-selected avatars and no option for a custom one. How are other users doing this?

They have been assigned those avatars by the staff. Users are not able to assign customer avatars themselves.

What you need to do to get an avatar is complain about it, just like you did here! ^^^^

Complaining about custom avatars, gets you a custom avatar then? Perhaps in a parallel universe.

Most of the people have custom avatars anyway, so why not enable it for others? I know it doesn't do anything, but on any forum I've ever been before you could have a custom avatar and it's kind of cool to put something you want instead of a car badge.

Custom avatars are earned. They are not set up so you can choose your own. I’m sorry.

I don’t know how to answer that question succinctly.
Let’s just say they are assigned to you when an admin decides its time, based on your posting habits.

I am depressed because of my avatarless existence, I feel alone and fictional, like popcorn with no butter.

Some pre-selected avatars have vanished from the selection list, but still exist on the forum server. Like the one I currently have : .
I'd like to switch to : , but that one has vanished from the selection list as well.

There are easy ways to check if a GIF is animated or not... but certainly the size constraint limits a lot there already. But of course, limiting to JPG means you've got less room to play with for an avatar (byte to byte, GIF is much more efficient for avatars).

Not sure what's going on, but I was able to go into your profile and select the A3 avatar...

Was it really a big problem when users could set their own custom avatars? Other forums don't seem to have issues in that department.

For me, personally, my online presence is somewhat defined by the screenname and avatar I've been using for years across all forums. It's a little weird to not be able to use it on just one forum.

EDIT: I laughed, but... Seriously. Is this all just some kind of mod/admin power trip?
