The Wall Street Journal reports that Best Buy is planning to match prices on many items offered by Amazon and other online retailers during the holiday shopping season. The move appears to be part of a larger effort from Best Buy to crack down on the number of consumers who scope out products in bricks-and-mortar stores and then buy them more cheaply online, a trend known as showrooming.

In addition to the expanded price match policy ó which the Journal notes will likely exclude certain items ó Best Buy is also said to be introducing free home delivery for products that arenít in stock in stores. In this way, the company will further limit the incentive for consumers to turn to sites like Amazon.

In general, the major bricks-and-mortar retail chains avoid directly acknowledging the threat Amazon poses to their business. However, like Best Buy, several of these chains have taken steps in recent weeks to clamp down on the showrooming trend, typically by focusing on making the shopping experience more convenient.

Meh. eBay often still blows 'em both out of the water, and I sure as hell don't wanna battle traffic to get to my local Worst Buy.

Meh, I really don't see BB as that convenient. I can get countless reviews online on any product have it shipped to my house and I totally avoid other shoppers, I would buy everything online if I could.

And i'd still have to pay tax on any items. On big ticket stuff, at the sales tax rate around here it can be $100 - $150 on a TV.

Since I already have Prime, i'll be sticking with Amazon.

Total Wine is like the promised land, there's one about an hour from my house in DE. Selection and prices totally blow my mind.

If I'm buying something that I could buy at Best Buy.... I'm probably buying it on eBay/ elsewhere online for half what they'd charge me. I don't even look there anymore.

    14. 10-12-2012 01:51 PM #13
I really don't care if Best Buy matched + a few %, I won't go there. I don't "showcase". I just don't go there and saving a few bucks really isn't worth the hassle. My Amazon cart is already filling up for Christmas and all I have to to is hit submit. Guess what? No one will try to sell me a cell plan, Sat. TV or pester me 47 times while Im there.

Tax? I don't mind paying state sales tax. Every time a see a pothole, a school that is falling down or a canceled essential state program, I remind myself why.

I'm perfectly fine with letting Best Buy fade away and close. They already closed one of the two stores near me anyways.

So where do people go to buy TVs in Germany? Or are they so evolved that they don't even watch tv anymore

I just don't trust Ebay for items as fragile as TV's, audio equipment. I like having at least some level of recourse.

I've bought two 46 inch tvs from Amazon with absolutely no problems in the past 3 years.

I hate the idea of buying electronics with out getting to physically play with it first. Numerous times i've walked into BB with the intent to by one product only to leave with a different one, spec comparisons are only half the story... And im sure as **** not walking into a Walmart if BB disappears...

I agree for eBay for sure, but have had good luck so far. Last TV 55" was online with Costco, but went to the local store and they had it... same price too and instant gratification too!

I'm done with price matching, it's such a hassle. I went to Fry's a while back to price match a microphone and their associate told me "Sorry, we added Amazon's shipping cost in, and we can't match it". I'm here at your store, purchasing the product. Are you going to ship it to me for the same price as Amazon? I told the guy he was wasting my time and placed the order on Amazon right in front of him.
