I can't tell you how impressed I am with how it tows. I bought the boat in VT and pulled it back to OH. It didn't blink and eye going up and down some of the hills that I get across to get back. Also, I was able to roll 80 with no problem, you hardly noticed the boat back there. Also, still got mid 20's for fuel mileage. If anyone needs a tow vehicle, I highly recommend one.

As beautiful as it was, I never really bonded with the boat, and actually sold it for more than I bought it for last year. I likened it to a supermodel - it was so pretty that it took away a lot of the joy of boating for me, as I became too focused on preserving the beauty, and worrying about dinging it up. It also drafted so deep, that I avoided a lot of shallower areas that I never even blinked at in my previous boat. Also, other than the beautiful sundeck, I actually hated the I/O engine. It was nothing against the Volvo, but after years of owning an outboard, I hated the throttle response, bow rise, planing times, and deep draft/wake. Nothing like putting a cast iron weight in the rearmost part of the boat. Also, winterization made me further realize what a bad idea the I/O is. Between the lousy access, all of the drain plugs and hoses that need to be pulled, and changing engine oil through the dipstick, it really made me miss my 2 stroke OB which was winterized just by pulling it out of the water!

Which brings my to my previous boat, a 1998 Bayliner 1800.

I bought this one new in 1997, and used the heck out of it for 14 years. In fact, these are the actual photos I took for the ad that I used to sell it after 14 years of use! I used that boat on many lakes and rivers, including Winnebago. Michigan, Monona, Green Lake, Lake Geneva, and I even camped on the Mississippi with it! Say what you want about Bayliners and Force Outboards, that boat NEVER gave me ANY trouble, and was cheap as heck to own and operate. Heck, I spent nearly as much on just insurance alone on the Cobalt, as I would spend on a season of boating with the Bayliner. And after 14 years of reliable and cheap entertainment, I was able to sell it for only $2800 less that what I paid for it brand new! It's only downfall was it was too narrow inside making it feel cramped with even just 4 people aboard (but nearly perfect for a solo ride with the dog).

After 17 years of boating, I am on a bit of hiatus right now until I have more time to enjoy it. If I do get back in, I will definitely go back to an outboard of some sort, perhaps like the newer Crownline 19 XS OB.
I would have killed for a crack at buying your Cobalt 200. It's optioned almost perfectly and Sport Candied Red makes me fuzzy down in my netherparts. Was it a 5.0 GXI or 5.7?

That said, I hear you on the "cheaper is more fun" aspect. We are getting very close to buying another boat, and part of me wants to go find something like this:

      http://knoxville.craigslist.org/bod/5390700245.html

When I had my Bayliner 1850, as long as I kept it up, it was no headache at all to own, and I took the damn thing EVERYWHERE. Upgraded to a 2450 and suddenly we were picking what days we went out, and how long we had the engine running for.

Ordered this back in June. Took the builder 5 months to finally deliver it and he didn't put a t-top on it as I had asked. So I ended up putting it on myself.

The day we brought it home.

      T-top installed.

      Christmas Eve sail today.

Thanks. Mine will be all-white with a red bootstripe (like the Cobalt above), but I am super thrilled. This will be my first non-Bayliner, so I feel like I am finally "leaving the nest".

I am still torqued that despite stuffing the engine bay with the largest engine offered, Platinum is still going to light me up like the 4th of July in a drag race with his Cobalt.

It's all about having a decent cruising speed without over-stressing the engine. That 5.3 will do that and get good fuel economy too (well, for a boat).

Saw it on TCL, looks fantastic. The cockpit is really cool.

Prompted me to transfer some of my boat pics from PB ().

      '80's cockpit for comparison.

Ready to get out of hibernation.

      And, back out here.
