For some it's "back in the day" and for others it's "seems like yesterday".

Thanks for the article! This really makes me miss my 85 Mustang GT. It was a great car and the last Mustang before they started fuel injecting them.
A couple of things really stand out to me - the prices on these cars. Under 10k new! Today we are paying 30k +/- for these cars (the Camaro and the Mustang). Also the 0-60 times - by todays standards they are slow, but they sure felt fast back then. Coming out of the abyss of the late seventies I can understand why the times don't seem to great.

If you're going to compare prices at least adjust for inflation.

I was thinking the same thing. $20k is the most expensive car tested. 0-60 times between 7 and 8 seconds. Braking was horrible. Only 200 hp in a Corvette!?
A new Toyota Camry would probably give any of these cars a run for their money.

That is what makes the price stand out even more to me now. I was a senior in high school when these cars were new. I had no concept of how much things cost.

1984 was a god awful year for the Corvette. Hell, the GNX was the fastest American production car in 87 until GM decided they couldn't have the Corvette play second fiddle to a Buick.
I don't have bad memories of these cars. I think they were great for the time.

The C4 and F-bodies really improved after getting Tuned Port Injection...

Wonder why the Camaro was faster than the Trans Am

"The Trans Am and the Camaro do share the same basic body, but we had two different examples. The Trans Am had the T-Top and larger and heavier wheels. In as-tested trim, it was 215lb heavier. The power to weight ratios here were 18.9 for the Trans Am, 17.8 for the Z28. We also suspect that the Trans Am engine was a little down on power and the Z28 engine wasn't."
The correct phrase is "I couldn't care less"

Wow, I used to think my Moms 1984 Trans Am was fast....but my GTI would beat it like it owed it money.

Very cool article. Those are the cars I grew up on.
On a side note, does anyone have the issue (1993 or 1994 I think) that is a top speed shootout with the Cobra, F bodies, RX7 and Corvette? THAT was a good read...

Just for fun I looked up the 0-100 times on a stock GTI and it was under 17 seconds. That's five seconds quicker than the corvette and 10 seconds faster than a Daytona Turbo. Anyone who thinks the good ol days are behind them is sorely mistaken.

      Wrong good 'ol days.
Anyway, I walking to my uncle about the C4 the other day. He said he had a friend that let him test drive an '84 C4 when they first hit the lot. Of course he beat the crap out of it and drove it back thinking that the car was far ahead of his old musclecars except for acceleration.
He also told me that the early C4s were wrecked at a crazy rate because the limits were so high. People started going in way over their head.
