For some reason, as much as a p-car fanboi as I am, I never liked the 996. Not quite sure why.

I actually love the MK2 996 headlights. I think it keeps it looking modern with the trend toward much bigger and stylized headlights v. the round retro bug eye of the 997 which limits Porsche a great deal.

What year did these headlights start? 02?

The 996 being relatively unappreciated is just making it that much easier to get into one.
Just gotta block out lovely 3-letter abbreviations like "IMS" and "RMS" out of your mind first, mind you...

RMS leak. Bad fuel pump, water pump and rubber hoses leaking. I believe based on friends experience that all the rubber hoses on those cars start drying out and cracking. That concerns 996s and 986s of late 90s early 2000s.

RMS leak I can understand, but why would the hoses go bad any quicker than a normal car? More heat in the engine bay or something?

Been indifferent to 996s. Now...not so much!

Looks better than a Modena, IMO

the 996 Targa is one of the two rear-engined Porsches i'd consider buying over a Cayman, Boxster, 944, 968, or 924 GT, or 928.

the other one i'd consider would be a 997 Targa

Really? Is that how it works? Hmmm, thanks for letting me know. I'm contemplating picking up a used Porsche in the next couple of years. Good to know that I shouldn't tap into the incredible collective knowledge that so many posters have not only accumulated over the years, but are actually willing to take the time to share freely and willingly. Phew, you saved me. I best ask 4Chan or Penthouse Forums.

Yep, 01+ for the turbo, 02+ for everything else.

I'm not a huge fan of most 996s, but I think the C4S and Turbos look amazing. In fact, I'd rather have them than most 997s... Maybe.

just drove my first 996 (and first porsche) yesterday. though it was just a regular hard top C4 with an automatic, i loved it! i liked how even with the awd, it would still get sideways easily enough. i just wanted to say that i appreciate the 996!

I hope i am being correct about this! I am going off my first hand experience as well as someone else's (someone i know). Cars of those years, German cars to be precise, all have problem with rubber hoses. I've had it on my late 90s BMW, on my late 90s VW PASSAT and my frineds had it on their 986 and 996 P cars. Could it be the quality of those hoses and all the plumbing? Perhaps they came from the same supplier? Could be. Extra heat would also contribute to that. Keep in ming that early 996s are also just like any other early new models.

I am not writing you this to scare you away. I think you should do that. But there will be maintenance and repairs involved, and some due to the age.

Yeah, its really best to ask a bunch of very opinionated dudes, most of which have never driven a Porsche. Rather than, lets say do some research.
