This thing has more design coherence and "flow" than ANY car at any price built in the last 3 years. FACT.

I love those motorhomes. Wonder what they go for nowadays.

While no where near what a nice vintage Airstream goes for these days, they are definitely increasing in value.

We've had a Palm Baech in my family for years. Bought new and passed on several times. It's held up pretty well considering the abuse and neglect these types of vehicles receive.

I never knew those were front wheel drive- but wasn't the front-drive Oldsmobile Toronado V8's transmission problematic due to the use of a small chain? Does this use that same transmission?
This things does look a lot nicer than the van based Winebago we traveled the country in (back in the 80s).

IIRC, a heavier duty version of the same transmission.

It's got a 3-speed hydro-matic turbo automatic transmission, whatever that means.
Forgot to mention they also have a Barbie version, which was recently featured in a stop motion film.

It's got a 3-speed hydro-matic turbo automatic transmission, whatever that means.

Specifically, the Turbo-Hydramatic 425. All Turbo-Hydramatic is is GM's first corporate automatic transmission family, in this case, 3-spd. (The different divisions had previously developed their own transmissions.)
However, the Turbo-Hydramatic family has 4-spd transmissions derived from it, many of which are still used today.

Why this car is automatic, systematic, hydro matic, why its greased lightin'.

IIRC, a heavier duty version of the same transmission.

now that i think about it- the issue was packaging. They had to use a small chain to make a power connection somewhere. Maybe in this much taller engine bay vehicle they were able to use a better power connection.

I was just watching the live-action Ben10 movie on Cartoon network with my boy and noticed alien-fighting grandpa drives and lives in one of these. Looks like he does in the cartoon as well.

There are a few on ebay right now.

I went through my period of coveting one of these. But no way do I want to do a frame-off restoration (read some wonderful sites about those) or deal with fixing stuff on a 30 year old coach.
In the end, I'm left with this thought: it pisses me off that no manufacturer took this design and ran with it. It's still pretty cutting-edge in the motorhome landscape, particularly the chassis. It also had the clever idea of having an automotive company develop and build the body and chassis while independent RV companies do the outfitting.
Got to say, looking through the old brochures online, an 23' Avion interiored motorhome or the swanky Eleganza II would be sweet....
Alas, I'll be waiting for a 08 Sprinter-based Pleasure-Way Ascent or Roadtrek SS Agile to drop to $30k....
