In the 1960s, Pontiac basically defined style and desirability when it came to automobiles. Pontiacs were the BMWs of their time, before BMW came along to become the BMW of their time.

That's one of the thing I love about GM cars in the 60s. You can pinpoint the year of production based on minor cosmetic changes

Pontiac's print advertising in the 1960's was legendary and arguably the best automotive print advertising ever done.Their print ads during the '60's were done exclusively by Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman. They had been the Advertising agency for Buick since 1953 until John Delorean hired them to be Pontiac's exclusive print advertising agency in the '60's. They did incredible work for Pontiac and helped transform and establish the Pontiac brand as High Performance from its' stodgy past image. John Delorean forbid photography to be used in any Pontiac ads, hence the beautiful hand-drawn prints. Bob Lutz who was heading up GM of Europe scooped-up Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman in the early '70's to work on the Opel account in Europe. I guess the GM Corporate "band of doom" that began in the '70's killed off this spirited advertising. http://www.fitz-art.com Modified by CadiGTi at 8:36 AM 11-7-2009

The Pontiac advertising art created by Fitzpatrick and Kaufmann is becoming highly collectible and valuable today. Collectible Automobile magazine did a full-length article on their art some years back, and it was very interesting. I forget which did which, but one of the artists rendered the automobile for each print, and the other did the background, and the way that the car was almost hyper-realistic, set against the dreamy, almost impressionistic art in the background scenes was one of the key factors in the success of these ads. Whatever they did, it certainly did work.

An early Fitzpatrick and Kaufmann work for Pontiac, from 1960:
1967:
Pontiac advertising returned largely to photographic images by the late 1960s, and this ad is probably ranked among the top 10 print advertisements in history. It helped to build the legend of the GTO:

I've always admired artists who can portray chrome, and glossy painted surfaces, using paint, and make the image look real, with all the light reflections and such that these objects create in real life. These ads are great examples of such talent.

Shown is the 1959 Pontiac "Broadsweep", a limited production, eleven-foot-wide convertible that seated 6 across, but was not popular due to its tendency to be involved in head-on collisions with oncoming traffic. Broadsweeps are rarely seen today because of this flaw.

It seems like that flaw would have been apparent, even before production

Couldn't find an ad, but I think this was one of the last elegant American cars for many years - 1971 Le Mans.Fairly quotidian stuff really - my grandmother had one that looked like it belonged on Sanford and Son - but I always loved its lines and details.

My uncle bought the first one to hit the showroom in Pittsburgh. He died in a fiery explosion when he pulled into a Mobil station and knocked down both rows of fuel pumps. At once.

It must be remembered that the automobile industry in those times was still a "freewheeling" kind of business, not regulated by Washington DC, where all of the intelligent people live. In modern times, an eleven foot-wide automobile would be out of the question. Unless, of course it was equipped with eleven foot-wide airbags, and 12 lap-shoulder belts.
