are you sure it s not a lifter ticking ? or is it a knocking sound ? or a tapping one ? its hard to diagnose like that ...it could be alot of things ////
lifter , oil pump, tensioner bolt , shifter rod .....et c...
you know before changing parts randomly , you ll better try to have someone to listen at your car ... i am not saying go to the dealer ...i hate dealers ..but someone who know well the mechanic ...

better thing to do is to record the sound that you can hear and post it on vwvortex ...a lot of people will help you like that ,,,

FYI you can change your tensioner bolt without removing the intake ...you just have to remove the airbox then the air boot connected to your TB ..then you ll have access to this bolt ....pretty easy ...
i did it on my car ....

i changed my shifter rod recently but it might be a lifter as when i listen to it by placing my ear by the vw sign on the engine cover it is really loud i have new lifters ready to install i am trying to figure out how to do it? im assumming that if it is a oil pump would there be a way to diagnose that somehow?

I had a similar noise and it was the serpentine belt tensioner. The belt stretched with age and the tensioner was rapping against the stop. Replace belt and problem was gone.

You can tell by listening where the sound is coming from.

If it is coming from the left side of the engine, serpentine (Probably) if it is the right side, it is the timing chains.
