There is something that always irritates me that I keep seeing more and more. Its when someone refers to a wagon (station wagon not Volkswagen) as a wagen. What started this? Does replacing the o with an e make you mad euro tite? Please elaborate almighty TCL

To Germans: Wagon = Variant or Combi, although they do call fastbacks, Combi as well.

It's funny that station wagons were called estate wagons in the US.

For the most part. If memory serves, it's also the cucumber capital of Japan. Hence the home-market ads for the FT-86 featuring Takeichi-kun, the cartoon cucumber whose meteoric rise through the underground drift world has shamed him in the eyes of his school-master.

Wagen, otherwise the term "shag-on wagon" looks silly.

I've only seen what you speak of in Craigslist ads with terrible spelling. "Wagen" doesn't even mean "Wagon" in German, the words are just born of a common ancestor.

They were called "suburban" before they became "estate".

Wagen just means car. You can use das Auto or der Wagen. So I guess it's fine if you for some reason feel like switching to German for one word, but I don't see why anyone would be motivated to do so.

Station Wagon (car) = Kombiwagen/Kombi/Kombiauto
Wagon (as in... a traditional wagon) = Wagen/ Kutsche/ Karren

Germans have their own special word for a Station Wagon.
