They didn't have to, the 335i and 328i would still have been enough for a checkmate in their respective categories vs. Audi.

no v10 in the M3. the M3 would be equivalent to the S4, or RS4 if you're really picky.

Ah yes. I guess the audi equivalent there would be the S5 but the S5 is significantly cheaper, and slower as well.

In a chess game, checkmate is the end game for sure.... so good for them for a quick quip. But the R8 is a production Audi and BMW doesn't currently have a competitor. If they're going M to answer the billboard, going R to answer BMW's seems the next move no?

Eh, at some level these two cars can compete although the design of the R8 is far more exotic and will certainly win in the looks department but, both have equal hp. I know the R8 is kind of esoteric in nature when compared with the commonality of the M3 but,....

The new billboard has to reference the "Checkmate" otherwise people will completely forget that the two are related.

there is no good response. in humor, you need to learn when to bow out, and start something new. The checkmate billboard is perfect, and any attempt to out-do it will just be embarrassing and look like a reach.
