 Audi A1 Sportback Concept« »

The start of the production of the A1 is ever closer and this concept gives us a pretty good idea what it will look like. My guess is that that a the shape of the sheetmetal will be 95% identical, but many details such as the C-shaped exhaust, polished-metal panels and pretty much the whole interior will be changed or toned down for the production model.

The production version should look as stunning as concept.

Audis keep getting less and less Bauhaus.
Simple and modern has vanished from their vocabulary.

George can you describe the purpose or what the grill looks like in person. what is the big clear plastic/glass thing that covers most of the grill and why is it there?

I'm guessing it's an aerodynamic element, but I'll ask around at the stand tomorrow. I've got an interview with Wolfgang Hatz (VAG's engine czar) tomorrow in the AM and will look around for design staff after that.

I like the flair they've added to the front grille - making it a bit more squared off. But most of all - those headlamps are stunning. The LED design makes that car look like one mean mother. Awesome.

The design elements should look stunning on larger models.

It's too bad Audi gave us the usual "Americans like big cars" excuse when asked why they wouldn't offer the A1 here in the US. It's extremely frustrating to see all these great cars knowing you'll never have to opportunity to buy them. It seems to me something like this would leave the Mini in the dust and BMW doesn't seem to have any problem selling those.

After driven a 170hp 1.4TSI in Golf GT, I can certainly bet this engine would serve A1 extremely well due to its lighter weight than the Mk5.

I completely agree with you regarding Audi's opportunity with the A1. I think the A1 will provide much needed utility to the U.S. market in this segment.

But don't think we won't get this vehicle. Audi isn't bringing it over...yet! It is built to be DOT certified so if and WHEN they decide AoA can bring it over without creating a whole new model like with the A3. I believe we will see this car. Audi just has to be careful how they market it. There is a reason why the MINI is not a BMW. Branding is very important. Audi has been spending a lot of time, money and energy making themselves out to be the new face of luxury. The A1, especially as a hybrid compact, could step on that a bit.

A3 sales are terrbile. Pathetic. That's why the A1 is unlikely.

This place is is insane - the biggest complaint I hear in the Car Lounge is that VW's are too expensive when loaded up with options and yet when they want to decontent and lower the price, the complaints get even louder. You can't have it both ways.

Yeah, I'd like to know as well.

Also, I noticed in the press release that the rear wheels aren't driven at all in the A1!?

Why not build this on the plug-in architecture VW's currently developing and have four in-wheel electric motors? There's no drivetrain loss from the AWD system, and it decreases rolling resistance, actually increasing efficiency (provided electric motors are smaller than in a FWD example)!

If it works out for you, I take full credit. If your car falls through the floor and crushes you, I had nothing to do with any of it.

The A3 is expensive and they don't offer a 2-door. It's basically a much smaller A4 Avant in terms of bodystyle and interior (never mind it's on the Golf chassis), with the same engines and for a similar price - and it's a hatchback.

That's why it doesn't sell.

The A1, though still a hatch, could be sold in the low-mid 20s as a luxury alternative to the Cooper S, which is in the same price range, but doesn't have as nice an interior.

I love the A3 but it probably doesn't sell because it is too close to the A4 in the lineup and it is very expensive for what you get compared to a Golf/Rabbit. The A1 is a very different story.

Audi said they would rather concentrate on diesel versions of the Q7 and [maybe] the A4 because Americans like big cars with mild fuel economy gains as opposed to small cars with significant economy gains.

And yet they keep pushing back the diesels later and later... and then won't offer them with manuals.

I think they should do both!

Audi Credit doesn't lease these cars anymore and supply is throttled because demand (at higher profit) is better in Europe. It's not an Apples and Apples comparison or example. The company line I got in Paris was more 'wait and see'. A3 will get an all-new version shortly, including a more US-friendly sedan version. It could even be built in Chattanooga, which would bring down the costs considerably and make a leasing model more viable. If that happens, and A3 'gets in line' then A1 would be considered.

Something else to consider.... prius does so well because there is no mostaking it. There are no petrol Priuses. Should Audi bring the A1 over, making it diesel or diesel hybrid only would be an interesting strategy.

Diesel hybrid would be the only hybrid that I am willing to consider, because it actually makes sense, unlike the gasoline hybrid.
