 Audi Considering A3 2.0 TDI for America« »

Audi’s diesel-powered R10 has captured the hearts of many enthusiasts whose veins may pump fuel but their minds think green. Even better, the wait for the first modern diesel Audis to hit the American market is almost over so long as you’re looking for a large SUV with consumption in the mid-twenties. If you want something more frugal than that, say some of our Audi contacts, your wait may not be as long as some fear. Enter the A3 2.0 TDI.

I would trade my A6 for one of these pretty quickly. No quattro though

Honestly, for what it is it probably doesn't make sense. Extra drag and 300lbs more of weight. A3 is already heavier than Jetta and it's not so high performance that it really needs it. I had a FWD golf 1.8T years ago and with snow tires it was about as good as the A4 1.8T quattro I had at the time.

If the idea behind this car is to be economical, giving it quattro is counterproductive.

If A3 Sportback is going to have 2.0TDI, this will be another canadiate to replace our old B5 A4.

I'd suspect so with 236 lb-ft of torque. A little sad they aren't looking at the 170hp version, since it would match the Audi performance image better. But I understand the economics there if it really would require different federalization.

This car would give me serious reason to advance my plans to run my '07 into the ground. I'm getting a real world 26 mpg. 35-38 mpg would be Great.

Go look up the Jetta's times - they're probably very similar.

If I were an AoA planner, this car would have already been here -- it's a no brainer. AoA must be a bit jealous of all the attention (and deposits) that the Jetta TDI is getting...

In europa the consumption is very important, the gallon = 7$.
My tdi consumes 2.33g=100millas And at power it(he) performs very good.

Great news. Probably unlikely, but I wish they would release the 2.0TDI with the A6 or Passat. No quattro necessary.

Agreed, George: I'll take a good set of snow shoes over some knucklehead who has quattro and crap tires any day of the week. My Dunlop Wintersports have been fantastic through two winters.

I hate diesel, it stinks up the place

Yeah I know it's largely cited that it's the quality of diesel fuel in NA that causes this but whatever, it still stinks.

Idunno, but I dove the 2.0TDI Jetta and I was pretty impressed with the low end TQ in that thing. Good in traffic and good on gas. My aggressive test drive was AVG 38mpgs. And that's pretty good, considering I floored it every stop sign and lights. I like it.

2.0TDI Q IMHO would be perfect.

BRING - IT - ON! I would think the Audi dealerships would welcome a second vehicle that offers a diesel motor. The Q7 SUV at one end and the A3 sportback on the other. The floor sales force will have more TDI product with which to hone their skills ~

Audi should get this A3 2.0 TDI to market yesterday ~ yeah a glimpse of the painfully obvious.

The idea of the new Jetta TDI wagon is an interesting alternative. VW de-contented their warranty for MY09 it's 3years/36 k miles. When paying the Audi admission its 4 years/50k miles which might come in handy given the complexity of the DSG gearbox.

Cheers,

I would get one. I have an '07 B6 Passat and have been eyeing the Jetta TDI. I couldn't do it because I thought it was a step down. The A3 I could justify in my mind. I would be in line tomorrow.
