Mazda's Nagare design language and the future of Mazda design« »

Mazda's Nagare (or "flow") design language as presented on Mazda's recent concept vehicles is supposed to provide a glimpse of Mazda's future design direction, especially in regards to the next RX sports car. The name was taken from the first concept bearing the design language, the Mazda Nagare.

While Nagare is very polarizing, it is undeniably fresh among automotive design. It can be argued that Nagare is the next significant progression in automotive design after flame-surfacing. Or is Nagare flame surfacing taken to the extreme?

What do you think of the design language?

Will it translate well on production car designs, which inherently must be more conservative to minimize polarizing opinion and manufacturing costs? While I like the Nagare concept cars, I have doubts that Mazda will be able to build Nagare production cars with the visual impact that makes the Nagare concepts so cool in the first place.

An overview of Mazda's Nagare concepts:

The newest one, unveiled today is the Mazda Kazamai:

Nagare is very effective on the Mazda Furai:

It's something unique and interesting on the first couple of concepts they released, IMO. It's losing its impact with several concepts sharing the language.

It looks like the next Miata may be a Nagare derivative:

While not all of them I like, at least it's different. While most other automakers designs are starting to look the same or at least steal cues from each other. I will take a Furai tho.

To me, it is interesting, and even sometimes VERY pretty (those fine sweeping lines along the sides of the Ryuga are gorgeous, IMO), but I get the nagging feeling that this direction of design has little in the way of "legs". It seems like it's centered far too much on surface detailing, rather than in the development of fundamental shapes and proportions. This is where the industry is stuck in a rut, today, IMO.

Yes Martha, you can get your new 2010 Toyota 4Runner with a 4-cylinder. As long as it's 2WD. And as long as it's with an old 4-speed automatic.

I think the concepts are incredibly cool but I'm getting bored not seeing ANY design cues from them not make it to production except for the stupid grille the new MX-5 has.

^Yeah, but the AWD gives the Veyron an edge in the wet - you ever seen a Tyranosaurus Rex try to cut an apex in the rain? Its ridiculous. With such small front arms, all the weight is at the back, makes him oversteer big time.
