Audi Selects Eaton TVS(TM) Supercharger To Power Fuel Efficient V6 | « » 6:45 PM 7/17/2008 | |
|
SOUTHFIELD, MI--Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that its Twin Vortices Series™ (TVS™) supercharger has been chosen by Audi to power the automaker’s all-new 3.0 liter TFSI V6 engine.“Audi engineers did extensive comparative testing and found our new TVS supercharger provided superior throttle response and low-end torque coveted by drivers,” said Joao Faria, president of Eaton’s Powertrain and Specialty Controls Business. “Additionally, when paired with direct injection and enhanced transmission ratio, the TVS supercharger helps the engine achieve 290 hp with an average fuel economy of nearly 24 miles per gallon.”' Full Story

Hey George, any word on whether we will be getting this engine in the U.S? If so, will it be affixed on any specific models and will it replace the NA 3.2 FSI VR6?

This engine will come in the A6 and the S4, possibly the Q5 and the Q7 base engine. This engine will be a step up from the 3.2 and not a replacement for it.

So the A6 will have both the 255 hp 3.2 and the 290 hp 3.0TFSI. Audi should just have the supercharged V6 as the base engine for the A6.

So the S4 will step down from 340hp to 290hp The car should be a bit lighter but the drop is 50hp... hmmmm?

There will be several tunes. 290hp will be the least powerful and fitted in the A6. Expect S4 to be more like 333hp.

The A4 needs this engine in place of the 3.2. There will be even less of a gap between the 3.2 and 2.0T because the 2.0T has become much more powerful, whereas the 3.2 posts nearly the same numbers as before.

Changing the topic slightly, George what is the news on the U.S. getting diesels in models other than the Q7? I'm currently in Spain on vacation and I am going crazy seeing all the cars we could get. For example, there is a Phaeton with a 5.0 V10 TDI engine from the Touareg always parked by my apartment.

A4 will get it for sure. The A4 is the top-selling car.A3 is also being considered with same drivetrain as the current 4cyl TDIs at VW according to Wolfgang Hatz.

At least that's some good news. What I don't get is that the U.S. Government opened up the road for the Europeans to bring diesels to all 50 States and the only company that has taken advantage of that is Mercedes-Benz. What does the VW Group have to offer? The Jetta TDI? What a joke. What I want to see is the Tiguan and the Q5 released with either the 2.0l I-4 or 3.0l V6 TDI motors. In my opinion, I think that would help their sales and it would help fuel costs for Americans that are already paying a ridiculous amount at the moment. The other day I was reading a British magazine that had an advert that had a Seat Leon FR TDI 170PS that can achieve an average of almost 50mpg... I am gonna stop before I get carried away but we are seriously getting screwed in the most capitalist country in the world.

Tiguan TDI is coming. Q7 3.0 TDI is coming. A4 3.0 TDI is likely coming and now A3 1.9 TDI is being considered strongly, so that's a much wider selection that'll be in dealers by the end of 2009.

Any reason behind them using the 1.9 instead of the 2.0? Are they both FSI? Any power and torque figures for these engines?

FSI is gas direct injection. TDI is direct injection, but diesel. The 1.9 being considered is the same as the one in the Jetta. There would be no federalization costs for the engine then as 1.9 is already "in-country" and 2.0 TDI gets paired with quattro, adding cost and lowering fuel economy. Both are being considered, but the 1.9 is MUCH more likely.

The new 50 state Jetta uses a 140hp 2.0TDI.

I was unaware displacement had changed. Regardless, the engien being considered most seriously is the same engine found in the Jetta.

A diesel A3 is pretty big news since its already a compact and that's what's big right now in the market. Add Audi's trademark and reputable TDI engine with ample power and awesome fuel efficiency and you've got a recipe for success. Talk about a car that will be just as fuel efficient as a Prius but more fun to drive!? Can't go wrong with this one!

i wouldn't mind a new a4 with this engine or just a diesel a3. but too bad the U.S doesn't want diesel.
