I'm sorry if this has already been talked about... but are we getting the 7 speed S Tronic here i the US at launch? I've been following the Q5 closely, and for some reason this was news to me?

This is all based on release dates of the cars. Certainly not every car comes out at the same time. Audi is in the middle of their world launch of the car. American waves of journalists will be there next week. I'll be among them and will get whatever US info I can glean.

Audi/VW almost always release new models in the US last, sometimes over a year later and without options offered to the rest of the world. BMW and Mercedes are beating Audi to market with diesels, and the GLK will have a 7-speed auto. The new C-series and 3-Series have been out for awhile and still no updated A4 for the US. I expect the Q5 will be the best car in the class, but can't someone light a fire under their butts? They're trying to gain market share vis-a-vis the other Germans and being last out of the gate in almost every market segment is not a great strategy for winning.

Audi actually is on a rotation with BMW of sorts. The RS4 is a good example. It came out, then new M3, then the next RS4, etc.

But those were on the existing platform, with the engine and transmission ahead of the axles, and it seldom got rated higher than BMW because it's so nose-heavy. BMW's current-generation 3 is bigger and better-handling than the old A4 it's been competing against. BMW's already doing a mid-cycle refresh just as the new A4 hits the market. The hideous X3 is getting a total makeover. So in actuality, Audi is a half-cycle behind BMW and Mercedes. The new powertrain configuration is only marginally better at weight distribution, with the entire engine ahead of the front differential, and it may still suffer compared to its competition. Why not just send power to the front diff by a propshaft, like everyone else except Subaru (which is also nose-heavy)? It's not a big deal in an SUV, however. I don't know why Audi insists on a front-drive biased layout when it's primarily a 4-wheel drive maker in the luxury market and is sending an ever-higher percentage of power (now at 60% or so) to the rear wheels. Can you ask them when you go there?

You know I haven't driven the Q5 yet, but I have spent time in the A5, A4 and S5. Yes, Audi is a half model cycle off of BMW and I think that's by intention. The new A4 is bigger and handles much better BTW.

I am also confused about what we will be getting here in the USA...Most publications state the V6 gas motor with a 6-speed auto box as in the A5. The latest "quattro quarterly" (Summer 2008) suggest that we will also get the new 2.0 TFSI 211hp / 258 lb-ft motor with the new 7-speed S-Tronic (DSG) gear box for in-line applications. That makes it good for some 7.2s 0-100kph (0-62mph), 27mpg and some illegal top speed. That is the motor that will go into the new A4. Considering the price of fuel and other economic factors I would like to predict that Audi will indeed give us the 2.0t option from the get go.

"Audi feels that American customers place a higher priority on comfort than do Europeans and may not be prepared to accept the S tronic's edgier shift quality, particularly in a small SUV. Mainly, the company is worried that you'll complain about "rough shifting" with the S tronic, a powertrain executive tells us."There is nothing wrong with the shifting of my DSG A3, and the TipTronic on my A4 irritates me. At least give me the option so that I can decide.
