So I have heard numerous references to weird French engineering. I'd love to hear about specific examples, so anyone who has some, please post!

Citroën DS. That's a good start for french quirkyness. This car, when introduced in 1955, featured so many features that the comeptitors thought that the engineers at Citroën had collectively lost their minds. Just the design alone was simply unheard of back then. When it in addition had features such as the hydraulic suspension system, the mono-spoke steering wheel, a rubber ball for brake pedal and more, it was truely something different.

Was it the later model Citroen that featured headlights that turned with the wheels to point in the direction of travel?

Yes, the turning lights apperead with the 1967 facelift, when the DS got dual round lights in a single housing.

France's automobile industry is carrying on the tradition established by Joseph Cugnot in the late 1700's; right at the very birth of motorized transportation:

I have always wondered why Cugnot did not get more credit for his part in developing the automobile

A friend of mine had a Renault R5 Alpine Turbo. Man that thing was fast and it was scary, having the engine right there behind you, where the rear seats should have been.

Here is Pierre-Jules Boulanger's (managing director of Citroen in 1935) directive that lead to the 2CV.
“Design me a car to carry two people and fifty kilos of potatoes at 60km/h, using no more than three litres of fuel every 100km. It must be capable of running on the worst of roads, of being driven by a debutante, and must be totally comfortable. It’s price must be less than a third of the 11cv Traction Avant” No wonder they made such interesting cars. The 11 in itself is a masterpiece in my mind.

I drove lots of Citroens as a teen. They drive so well and so differently that you really have to reset yourself when you get in a regular car. After driving a CX for a few days I got back into my Acura and nearly drove thru an intersection trying to stop!! Got used to the CX's incredible brakes and minute pedal travel!! Awesome cars to experience.

Good observation! The SM is indeed only a 2-door coupe, but the one we're looking at here is a conversion made for the French president. This model is known as the Citroën SM Opèra. This conversion was made by the french coach builder Chapron, who also made a 2-door convertible (SM Mylord) and a 4-door convertible (SM Presidentielle) Pictures of the Opera: http://www.allsportauto.com/en...a.php SM Presidentielle

I see your Citroen DS and raise you a Citroen Visa, the weirdest Citroen I know. By this point they had totally lost their minds.

The van variant survived well into the 90s, though the dash calmed down alot:

Sadly Citroen's most successful period volume wise has to be the late nineties when the cars were very dull but worked and had fantastic cash back deals....thankfully they have figured out a way to be slightly quirky and build cars that sell with the new C5. Another one that comes to mind is the Talbot Matra Ranchero. Weird weird weird. It had a 1.4 and 80BHP, was designed to offer Range Rover style looks for half the price. 60,000 built between 1977 and when it died around 1984. I haven't seen one on the road in at least 15 years.
