MTM R8 – Development is Going Strong, First Photos« »

It has long been questioned and discussed if MTM should attend to the Audi R8. Today the German company can give you an answer: They will. Therefore MTM does not want to withhold the first pictures of the prototype.

I wonder if they'll supercharge. They did on the RS4.

I know what oversteer and understeer are...but what does this sentence mean?

"The rim sizes for front and rear axle are specially customized for the R8 and positively influence the tendency to over-/understeer."

Specifically the "...positively influence the tendency to over-/understeer..."

Does not compute in my brain. Help!

I didn't write it and it was likely written by a non native English speaker, but I believe what they're saying is that they're adjusting compound and contact patch size via wheel width setups to control the car's tendency to understeer or oversteer. There's actually a long article we featured yesterday in the Audi News Blog on the R8 and the Viper that was featured on Zerin's website that addresses the stock R8's tire/handling relationship (i.e. wider at the rear and how much wider).

Quote »
...he’d like more front tire. There’s a reason mid-engined street cars are supplied with a sizable “stagger” – the difference in width between the front and rear tires – it keeps stockbrokers, first-year neurosurgeons, and spoiled heiresses from exiting off-ramps backwards at high speeds. A high amount of stagger ensures that the front end never outgrips the rear. Still, the R8 deserves better. The chassis is so solid, so trustworthy, and so competent that it could use another 20 or 30mm of front tire, just to allow further exploration by experienced drivers. Given an R8 of our own, we’d fit the Hoosier R6 in a 255 or 265 width in front, and a 295 or 305 in the rear, and really set some hot laps.

No, unfortunately not. What we printed is what they released.
